Abstract

This chapter focuses on travel narratives translated for a British readership. It starts with a brief introduction laying out the similarities between travel writing and translation and siting both practices in the fields of Translation and Travel Writing Studies. It then provides a historical overview of trends in the translation of travel writing from the late medieval period to the present day, studying the broad sociohistorical context driving the translation process and the place of such works in the publishing market. The third part studies translation strategies, with close readings of textual manipulation in translation to adapt the work to a new ideological context. The chapter concludes with a brief exploration of the feminist and post-colonial contexts for translated travel writing, looking in particular at how works moved, or failed to move, from the periphery to the imperial centre, drawing on case studies of translated works of travel by authors from Malaya and Uganda.
