Abstract

The Nobel Prize Laureate V. S. Naipaul (1932-2018) was a prolific writer not only of fiction but also of a host of travelogues describing areas outside Europe. Naipaul’s travelogues borrow from his fiction through their sometimes novelistic style, but in no way are they mere extensions of his novels. Several texts treat the Caribbean, and in particular Trinidad, where Naipaul was born. The first of these is The Middle Passage (1962), with its unenthusiastic and bleak vision of the West Indies, which sets them against a British or Western value system. Naipaul’s writing about India, especially An Area of Darkness (1964), where he casts himself as an outsider, repeats the narrative situation, with an author looking for his roots while voicing his scepticism. The occasionally even openly displayed sense of futility, however, changes in later books about India. Two books about Islamic countries and one about the Southern part of the United States (A Turn in the South, 1989) further explore contemporary societies.
