There is a disagreement in the literature as to the intermediates and final products of the photochemical reaction of diluted aqueous solutions of K 4 Mo (CN) 8 . In the article we give arguments to support our view that the formula of the red intermediate ion is [Mo(CN) 8 (H 2 O) 2 ] 4⊖ . In particular we give an answer to recent objections by Perumareddi against such an interpretation. In the theoretical part we also reconsider König's interpretation of the electronic spectrum of [Mo(CN) 8 ] 4⊖ , in terms of a flattened Archimedean antiprism.

A proximity effect in arene π-complex formation from the reaction system of an aryl Grignard reagent and anhydrous chromic chloride was investigated. The yields of arene π-complexes and any accompanying reaction products were compared by the systematic variation of the aryl Grignard reagent employed. Phenyl Grignard gave the best yield of π-complex followed by the benzyl, mesityl and β-ethyl phenyl analogues. The styryl and phenylacetylenyl analogues did not form any π-complexes. The coupling reaction of benzyl groups gave a new π-complex, π-bibenzyl-π-toluene chromium, along with toluene, bibenzyl and trans-stilbene. Trans-stilbene was found without forming a trace amount of cis-stilbene. A mechanism for this stereospecific and α-hydrogen elimination coupling reaction is proposed.

The reaction sequence tryptophan →chanoclavine-I → agroclavine → elymoclavine →lysergic acid derivatives was demonstrated in Claviceps. Incorporation of chanoclavine-I into ergoline derivatives ranged up to 40 per cent. No conversion of elymoclavine or agroclavine into chanoclavine-I could be demonstrated.

The biosynthesis of gramine was tested by growing the germinating barley in media containing pyruvic, 2- 14 C acid, W-benzyloxycarbonyl-tryptophan β- 14 C and tryptophan, β- 14 C. Iso-nicotinylhydrazide was also added in a series of experiments to inhibit the cleaving action of pyridoxal phosphate. The presence of the inhibitor reduces the total uptake of tryptophan and benzyloxycarbonyl-tryptophan by a factor of 15 - 20, while the uptake of pyruvic acid and the total production of gramine were reduced by a factor of only 0.5. This fact suggests an alternative route for the biosynthesis of gramine, when the path via tryptophan is blocked.

Messungen zum Mechanismus der selektiven Krebszellenschädigung durch Extremhyperthermie werden unter Simulation der in vivo bei Krebsgeschwülsten herrschenden Mangelbedingungen durchgeführt. Wir fanden für pO 2 = 7,5 Torr, daß im Fall guter Versorgungslage der Krebszellen (starke Gärung) unter bestimmten Bedingungen bei 43 °C nach 33 Min. und bei 44 °C nach 18 Min. meist sprunghaft ein irreversibler Stopp der Atmung und damit Stopp von Zellwachstum und Zellteilungsfähigkeit eintritt. Weiter wurde gefunden, daß bei der therapeutischen Schädigung von Krebszellen (in guter Versorgungslage) durch Hyperthermie eine „Minimaltemperatur“ besteht, welche bei EMAC-Zellen etwa bei 42,5 °C liegt. Nur der Temperaturbereich der Extremhyperthermie gewährleistet daher echte therapeutische Wirksamkeit. Bei Krebszellen in schlechter Versorgungslage (schwache Gärung) bzw. wenn kein sprunghafter Atemstopp vorausgegangen ist, hat der therapeutische Effekt einen völlig anderen Charakter und besteht in einer fast linear mit der Hyperthermiedauer fortschreitenden Hemmung der Atmung. Die Gegenüberstellung der bei starker und schwacher Gärung erhaltenen Messungen veranschaulicht die Auswirkungen des Vorschlages, zeitweilig während der Therapie, insbesondere der Extremhyperthermie-Therapie, die in vivo Krebszellen-Gärung künstlich durch Steuerung der Blutglucosekonzentration zu verändern.

Über Messungen der Abhängigkeit des anaeroben Glucoseverbrauches von Ehrlich-Mäuse-Aszites-Carcinomzellen von der Glucose-Konzentration und von der Temperatur wird berichtet. Es zeigt sich, daß die anaerobe Gärung bei Übergang von 38 °C auf 44 °C im Fall eines hohen Glucosespiegels in vitro etwa auf 130% zunimmt und weiter, daß sie unter in-vivo-Bedingungen beim Übergang zu Extremhyperthermie-Temperaturen sich nicht ändert. Messungen über den Einfluß der Extremhyperthermie auf den anaeroben Glucoseverbrauch ließen für den Fall eines hohen Glucosespiegels (starke Gärung) erkennen, daß der beobachtete plötzliche Stopp des Gärungsstoffwechsels nach Hyperthermiedauern eintritt, bei denen die Atmung (Schädigungsmechanismus Typ II) gerade aufgehört hat. Für den Fall eines niedrigen Glucosespiegels (schwache Gärung) wurde gefunden, daß sich die Zeitdauer für den Stopp der anaeroben Gärung durch Extremhyperthermie verringert. Abschließend werden Schlußfolgerungen aus diesen Ergebnissen insbesondere zur Frage des zeitlichen Verlaufes des Glucosespiegel-Anstieges und der relativen Wachstumsbeschleunigung bei Krebsgeschwülsten im Anschluß an einen Extremhyperthermie-Prozeß gezogen.

Zusammenfassend läßt sich sagen, daß im menschlichen Serum ein Serumprotein vorhanden ist, welches das aus menschlichem Gewebe gewonnene Nucleoprotein spezifisch bindet. Zur Zeit sind Untersuchungen im Gang. den Serumgehalt des Nucleoproteins und des spezifisch bindenden Serumproteins bei verschiedenen Erkrankungen des Bindegewebsapparates quantitativ zu erfassen.

Das aufgefundene Ribonucleoprotein besitzt die Eigenschaft eines Vollantigens. Die durchgeführten Immunisierungsversuche ergaben eine Artspezifität des Antigens. Eine Organspezifität war nicht nachweisbar. Erste Lokalisierungsversuche mit Hilfe der Immunfluoreszenz-Methode ergaben in der Niere eine besondere Anreicherung des Nucleoproteins in den Glomerulokapseln.

In weiteren Versuchen wurden Streptokokken der Gruppe A und C dem in der I. Mitteilung beschriebenen Trennungsgang unterworfen. Es gelang dabei, aus diesen Streptokokken ein Nucleoprotein zu isolieren, das in bezug auf seine elektrophoretischen Eigenschaften, Farbreaktionen, UV-Absorptionskurve, Zuckeranalyse mit dem aus menschlichen und tierischen Organen gewonnenen Nucleoprotein identisch ist.

A method is described for the preparation of tritiated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with extremely high specific activity in the presence of AlCl 3 and HTO. The hydrocarbons are purified by preparative thin layer and paper chromatography. The radiochemical purity of the compounds was proved by paper chromatography and dilution analysis. The following specific activities are reached: Anthracene: 54 Curies/mMol, 7,12-Dimethylbenzanthracene: 19 Curies/mMol, 3,4-Benzopyrene: 24 Curies/mMol, and 3-Methylcholanthrene: 44 Curies/mMol.

The nature and quantity of sterols in leaves and chloroplasts of Spinacia oleracea, Antirrhinum majus, and Allium porrum were determined. From dried leaves 0.05 - 0.18% free and esterified sterols were isolated, and 0.04-0.09% from chloroplasts. Although approximately half the lipids of leaves is localized in chloroplasts we found no more than a quarter of leaf sterols in the chloroplasts. The mixture of sterols contains a major sterol and minor sterols in these species. In spinach a-spinasterol is the major sterol and in Antirrhinum and Allium β-sitosterol. Moreover, we established Δ 7 -stigmastenol and cholesterol in spinach. Besides for free sterols, leaves contain sterol esters and glycosides. Palmitic acid is the binding partner in the sterol esters of spinach, and glucose and mannose are the binding partners in sterol glycosides. Chloroplasts contain the same sterols as leaves do. Only a trace of sterol glycosides could be detected in chloroplast preparations.

The mode of acting in free electrophoresis was studied with a chlorophyll and protein containing extract, prepared by using digitonine. This extract shows an anodic shifting direction. Within the pH-range of about 4,1 - 8,4 this complex behaves as an uniform homogeneous substance. At pH 9,4 the main part of the digitonine, that was necessary to dissolve the chlorophyll-proteincomplex, splits off being slower than the green chlorophyll containing fraction, the so called “Chlorophyll-Holochrome”. This could be a possibility to isolate this “Chlorophyll-Holochrome” in an aqueous solution, to investigate the structure proteids or even the enzymes of the very first steps in photosynthesis being adjacent to chlorophyll.

The isolation of vacuoles from rootlets of corn seedlings based on the slicing and chopping of the plasmolized tissue is described. The isolated vacuoles have densities higher than 1,029 g cm -3 ; in the centrifugal field they rapidly move centripetally if the extracts are brought to a density of 1,185 g cm -3 by the addition of 30% of “Urografine”. Thus a simple separation of isolated vacuoles from the extracts could be achieved. The following hydrolytic enzymes have been localized in isolated vacuoles: protease, RNase, DNase, phosphatase and two different unspecific esterases. Furthermore two transaminases, aspartate and alanine-aminotransferase and two oxyreductases cytochrome-c-reductase and diaphorase are present in preparations of isolated vacuoles. The absence of mitochondrial enzymes and of enzymes known to be localized in the groundplasm indicated the purity of the preparations of vacuoles. It is concluded that the vacuoles of higher plant cells represent organelles in which the processes of intracellular digestion take place.

Up to 25 proteins have been found in the sap of potato tubers by polyacrylamid electrophoresis. The mode of preparation and concentration of the plant material was investigated as well as the pretreatment of the polyacrylamid gel to avoid undue retardation of the migrating bands. Sulfite was the most active inhibitor of sap-browning compared with ascorbic acid and cysteine. which did not influence the protein pattern except for one line. The juice had to be dialyzed or filtered through Sephadex G 25 to remove an unkown acidic material which interferes with the more acidic proteins and causes spreading and diffusing of bands. Proteins were concentrated by means of Carbowax MW 20000. For best results ionic contaminations inherent in the gels was removed by electrophoresis before applying the proteins or dyes. Very few proteins were affected by decreasing the pore size of the gel. Ammonium sulfate (40% saturation) precipitated mainly those proteins which are similar in electrophoretic behavior to the albumin- and transferrinregion of human plasma.

Zeorin, das neue Triterpen Eulecanorol, ( + )-Usninsäure und Rangiformsäure, L. badia (HOFFM.) ACH. v. milvina RABENH. Lobarsäure und (+)-Usninsäure und L. sulphurea (HOFFM.) ACH. Zeorin und ( + )-Usninsäure.

Die Struktur des kürzlich von Becke-Goehring,Leichner und Scharf beschriebenen 2.4-Dithio-2.4-dichloro-1.3-dimethyl-cyclodiphosphazan,P 2 Cl 2 S 2 N 2 (CH 3 ) 2 haben wir röntgenographisch bestimmt.
