Cloud computing is a new technology model for IT services that many businesses and organizations are adopting. It allows them to avoid locally hosting multiple servers and equipment and constantly dealing with hardware failure, software installs, upgrades and compatibility issues. For many organizations, cloud computing can simplify processes and save time and money. This article defines cloud computing and shows how it is different from other types of computing. It also discusses how cloud computing solutions could be beneficial to libraries in three basic areas: technology, data and community. Cloud Computing ist eine neue Technologie für IT-Services, die mittlerweile von vielen Unternehmen und Organisationen für ihre Zwecke in Anspruch genommen wird. Ein Vorteil an Cloud Computing ist: Auf lokal gehostete Server und eine umfangreiche IT-Infrastruktur kann verzichtet werden. Damit entfallen auch mögliche Hardwarefehler, notwendige Software-Installationen oder Upgrades sowie Kompatibilitätsprobleme. Cloud Computing bedeutet für viele Unternehmen und Organisationen eine Vereinfachung der Arbeitsprozesse sowie eine Kosten- und Zeitersparnis. Dieser Artikel definiert Cloud Computing und zeigt die Unterschiede zu anderen IT-Technologien auf. Gleichfalls werden drei grundlegende Bereiche beleuchtet, in denen Cloud-Computing-Lösungen für Bibliotheken sehr vorteilhaft sein können: Technologie, Daten und Kooperation. L'informatique dématérialisée, ou en nuage, est un nouveau modèle de technologie pour les services de TI adoptée par plusieurs entreprises et organisations. Elle leur permet d'éviter l'hébergement local de serveurs et d'équipements multiples, et de devoir constamment composer avec des défaillances de systèmes, des installations de logiciels, des mises à jour et des problèmes de compatibilité. Pour plusieurs organisations, l'informatique dématérialisée peut simplifier les processus et leur permettre d'épargner temps et argent. Cet article explique l'informatique dématérialisée et démontre comment ce modèle de technologie est différent de tous les autres types d'informatique. Il explique également comment les solutions d'informatique dématérialisée pourraient être avantageuses pour les bibliothèques dans trois secteurs de base: les technologies, les données et la communauté.

‚Science Apps’ lassen sich ähnlich wie ‚Google Apps’ als Service- und Toolsets für virtuelle Arbeits- und Forschungsumgebungen verstehen. Dabei geht es insbesondere darum, fach- und projektspezifische Werkzeuge für die Unterstützung wissenschaftlicher Projekte zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Entwicklung von ‚Science Apps’ steht noch ganz am Anfang, wird sich aber für vernetzte und meistens auch interdisziplinäre Kollaborationsszenarien als immer wichtiger erweisen. Zugleich verbinden sich mit solchen Versorgungsanforderungen grundlegende Veränderungen im Verständnis der zentralen Dienstleister (Bibliotheken, Medien- und Rechenzentren). ‘Science Apps’ could be understood as service and tool sets for virtual research and working environments – similar to ‘Google Apps’. Thereby the main focus is to make available subject and project specific tools to support scientific projects. The development of ‘Science Apps’ is still in the very beginning, but will get more and more important for the networked and mostly interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers and research groups. In a close connection with these new demands the understanding of the central academic support institutions (libraries, computer and media centers) will be changed very fundamentally. «Science Apps» peuvent être compris comme un ensemble de service et d'instruments pour des environnements de travail et de recherche virtuels comparable à «Google Apps». Il s'agit notamment de mettre à la disposition des outils spécialisés pour soutenir des projets scientifiques. Le développement de «Science Apps» se trouve encore au tout début, mais se montrera de plus en plus important aux scénarios de collaboration en réseaux et interdisciplinaires. En même temps de telles exigences de service nécessitent des changements fondamentaux dans la conception des instruments principales de service (bibliothèques, centre de médias, de calcul).

Anhand von Interviews und Fragebogenauswertungen beleuchtet und analysiert der Artikel, ob das Massenmedium Comic noch immer einen Marginalbestand in deutschen Bibliotheken darstellt, oder ob sich die Sammlungs- und Erschließungspraktiken seit den 1970er Jahren verbessert haben und man als Leser oder Forscher eine mittlerweile zufrieden stellend aufbereitete Anzahl von Comics vorfindet. Auch die deutschlandweite Organisation des Sammelns steht hierbei auf dem Prüfstand. Dabei bestätigt sich die zugrunde liegende These, dass wichtige Entwicklungen zu einem Großteil an den deutschen Bibliotheken – öffentlich wie wissenschaftlich – vorbeigegangen sind: Nicht nur im Vergleich mit Frankreich, Belgien oder den USA wird der Aufholbedarf des deutschen Bibliothekswesens für den Sammlungsgegenstand Comic deutlich. Based on interviews and empirical data this article analysis whether comic books, graphic novels, and manga still can be considered as neglected, marginal media in the library landscape, or if collection building and cataloguing procedures and routines have changed since the 1970s seeing comics become remarkable parts of the libraries' collections sufficient to satisfy readers and researchers. A further aspect of the article is the level of national organization of cataloguing and collecting. The main thesis in this paper is, that major developments in the general field of librarianship but also on the specific field of comics librarianship have passed without inducing any further recognition in the treatment of comic books in German libraries: Not only a comparative view on major comic collections in other countries shows the enormous effort necessary for integrating comics in modern German librarianship. Basé sur des interviews et des résultats de questionnaires l'article pose la question si les bandes dessinées, des romans graphiques et manga sont toujours considérés comme médias négligés et marginaux dans les bibliothèques allemandes, ou si par la pratique des collections et de catalogage ont changé depuis les années 1970 et par conséquent les lecteurs et chercheurs trouvent alors une quantité de bandes dessinées satisfaisante. Même la formation de collections en Allemagne est mise en examen. La thèse principale de l'article se trouve confirmée: des développements importantes ont passé à côté des bibliothèques allemandes, soient-elles publiques ou de recherche. Le besoin de rattrapage des bibliothèques allemandes quant à la collection des bandes dessinées est considérable, pas seulement en comparaison avec la France, la Belgique ou les Etats-Unis.

Der Nachweis wissenschaftlicher Open-Access-Publikationen in Bibliothekskatalogen im Sinne der Kataloganreicherung stellt Bibliotheken vor zahlreiche Fragen. Am Beispiel von hybriden Publikationen (parallele Druck- und frei verfügbare elektronische Ausgabe) wird gezeigt, wie Bibliotheken gegenwärtig damit umgehen. Bisher gibt es keine einheitliche Richtlinie, und so verfährt jede Bibliothek bzw. jeder Verbund anders. In weit reichenden nationalen Recherchen haben die Autorinnen die unterschiedlichen Handhabungen analysiert und kritisch bewertet. The appearance of scientific open access publications in library catalogues in terms of catalogue enrichment presents libraries with a number of challenges. For example, hybrid publications (parallel print and freely available electronic edition) which libraries now have to deal with. Because of the lack of any uniform policy libraries deal with these differently. In a wide-ranging national survey the authors have analysed and critically evaluated different approaches. L'apparition dans les catalogues de publications scientifiques d'accès libre, comme forme d'enrichissement, pose aux bibliothèques de nombreux défis. À l'exemple des publications hybrides (éditions disponibles en imprimée comme en numérique et librement accessible), on abordera les méthodes utilisées actuellement pour traiter ces ressources. En l'absence de politique commune chaque bibliothèque et/ou groupe procède différemment. Les auteurs ont analysé et évalué ces approches différentes à partir d'une large enquête nationale.

Am Beispiel der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek werden Strategien von Krisenmanagement und Überlegungen zum Objektschutz in Notfällen vorgestellt. Drei Fälle schildern die Reaktion auf Wasser- und Feuchtschäden. Strategies for disaster management and ideas for disaster preparedness for library objects are presented with examples from the Austrian National Library. Three case studies describe the reaction to damage caused by water and high humidity. La réaction en cas d'urgence et des mesures d'urgence pour les collections sont présentés à l'exemple de la Bibliothèque nationale d'Autriche. Les mesures pris dans trois cas de détruits causés par l'eau et l'humidité élevé sont décrits.

Ver- und Gebotsschilder gehören in deutschen Bibliotheken zum Standard. Kaum eine Bibliothek, die darauf verzichten möchte. Im Rahmen eines studentischen Seminars wurde die Wirkung dieser Schilder untersucht. Dabei ging es u. a. um Farb- und Kontrastwirkung, aber vor allem auch um die Wirkung auf den Kunden. Werden Ver- und Gebote mit in die Kommunikationsstrategie eingebunden? Der Beitrag zeigt, dass die Zahl der Ver- und Gebotsschilder in den meisten Bibliotheken sehr groß ist, das Design wenig professionell und die Aussagen oft nicht eindeutig sind. Im Sinne des Kundenmanagements werden in dem Beitrag auch Alternativen aufgezeigt. Prohibition and mandatory signs are standard in German libraries. Hardly a library wants to miss out. As part of a student seminar, the effect of these signs was studied, especially color and contrast effects but also and mainly effects on the customers. Are prohibitions and mandatories integrated into the communication strategy? The paper shows that the number of prohibition and mandatory signs in most libraries is very large, the design unprofessional-looking and the statements are often ambiguous. For the purposes of customer management the paper shows some alternatives. Des panneaux d'interdiction et d'injonctions sont courants aux bibliothèques allemandes. Il se trouve guère une bibliothèque prête à y renoncer. L'effet de ces panneaux fut scruté dans le cadre d'un séminaire d'étudiants. Il s'agissait entre autres choses de l'effet de couleurs et de contrastes et surtout de l'effet sur les clients. Les interdictions et les injonctions sont-elles intégrées à la stratégie de communication? L'article démontre que le nombre de panneaux d'interdictions et d'injonctions se trouve dans la plupart des bibliothèques très élevés, de design peu professionnel, et les énoncés pas clairs. Pour le management des clients l'article présente des alternatives.

Der Augustinerlesesaal der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek weist eine wechselvolle Geschichte auf. Der barocke Lesesaal des Klosters, der 1775 im Wesentlichen sein heutiges Erscheinungsbild erhalten hatte, wurde 1830 von der kaiserlichen Bibliothek übernommen und in der Folge auf unterschiedlichste Art und Weise genutzt. Anlässlich der 2008 neu gegründeten Sammlung von Handschriften und alten Drucken wurde der Lesesaal den Bedürfnissen eines modernen Sonderlesesaals entsprechend adaptiert. The reading room of the Augustinian-monastery, part of the Austrian National Library, can look back to an eventful history. In 1775 the baroque reading room of the monastery became more or less the actual appearance. 1830 it was part of the Royal Court Library and was used in different ways. On the occasion of the founding of the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books in the year 2008 the reading room was adapted for this special function. La salle de lecture des augustiniens de la Bibliothèque nationale d'Autriche reflète un passé mouvementé. La salle de lecture baroque du couvent qui reçut en 1775 l'essentiel de son apparence d'aujourd'hui, fut. En 1830, prise en charge par la bibliothèque impériale et par la suite affectée aux utilisations les plus diverses. Ce fut à l'occasion de la fondation nouvelle de la Collection des manuscrits et vieilles impressions en 2008 que la salle de lecture fut adaptée aux besoins d'une salle de lecture spécialisée moderne.

Urban Mediaspace Aarhus is the working title of a new main library planned to open in 2014 in Aarhus which, with more than 300,000 inhabitants, is the second largest city in Denmark. The public library will be Denmark's largest and a fulcrum for international library development. The building is situated in the core of Aarhus, exactly where the City meets the harbour at the Aarhus river mouth. This spot is where the first settlements in Aros took place in the latter half of the ninth century, and where later the Viking fleets met and set sail for foreign shores. Eventually growing into a well-known urban conglomeration and a place for trade and commerce, Aarhus developed a wide range of public services. The first public library was opened in 1869 and the existing main library was inaugurated in 1934. „Urban mediaspace Aarhus“ ist der Arbeitstitel für die neue Hauptbibliothek, die 2014 in Aarhus eröffnet werden soll. Aarhus ist mit über 300 000 Einwohnern die zweigrößte Stadt Dänemarks. Die öffentliche Bibliothek wird Dänemarks größte sein und ein Stützpunkt der internationalen Bibliotheksentwicklung. Das Gebäude befindet sich im Zentrum von Aarhus, genau dort, wo die Stadt auf den Hafen trifft, an der Mündung des Flusses Aarhus. An diesem Ort entstanden im späten neunten Jahrhundert die ersten Siedlungen von Aros; später trafen sich hier die Flotten der Wikinger, um die Segel zu fremden Küsten zu setzen. Letztendlich entwickelte es sich zu einer bekannten städtischen Siedlung und einem Gewerbe- und Handelsplatz. In Aarhus entstand eine große Bandbreite von öffentlichen Diensten. Die erste öffentliche Bibliothek wurde 1869, die bestehende Hauptbibliothek wurde 1934 eröffnet. “Urban Mediaspace Aarhus” est le titre de travail de la nouvelle bibliothèque centrale dont l'ouverture est prévue en 2014, d'Aarhus, une ville avec plus de 300.000 habitants la deuxième du Danemark. La bibliothèque publique sera la plus grande et le pivot du développement international des bibliothèques. L'immeuble est située au centre d'Aarhus, exactement là où la cité rencontre le havre de l'embouchure du fleuve Aarhus. L'endroit est celui où les premières installations ont eu lieu à Aros dans la seconde moitié due neuvième siècle et où plus tard les flottes de Vikings mettaient les voiles à la conquête de nouveaux horizons. Se développant vers une conglomération urbaine bien connue et une place de négoce et de commerce Aarhus s'est munie d'une grande gamme de services publics. La première bibliothèque publique fut ouverte en 1869 et la bibliothèque principale d'aujourd'hui en 1934.

Students now use the physical library in another way than before. They come to work (often in groups) and to socialise. This shift in user behaviour necessitates changes of the physical library. The library must be a learning common if the library shall meet the expectations of students. This article presents the work done in the State & University Library, Aarhus, Denmark. It is not only work on architecture, but also changing the organisation and developing new staff competencies. Studenten benutzen heute das Bibliotheksgebäude anders als früher. Sie kommen um zu arbeiten, oft in Gruppen, und kombinieren auch in der Bibliothek Arbeit und Freizeit. Die Veränderung der Verhaltensweise der Benutzer erfordert Veränderungen der physischen Bibliothek. Dieser Artikel gibt eine kurze Präsentation von der Arbeit mit Veränderungen der Architektur und des Kundendienstes der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Aarhus, Dänemark. Aujourd'hui les étudiants se servent des bâtiments de la bibliothèque d'une autre manière qu'avant. Ils restent là pour travailler, souvent en groupe et combinent en même temps les études et les loisirs. Le changement de comportement d'utilisateur demande aussi des changements d'aménagement de la bibliothèque. Cet article présente les efforts dans cette domaine faites par la Bibliothèque Nationale et Universitaire; Aarhus, Danemark.

In 2007, a major structural reform was carried out in Denmark, reducing 271 municipalities to 98. This processes had a number of effects, both direct and indirect on collections, lending, leadership, and service development of the Danish public libraries. It also led to closure of many branch libraries. Nevertheless, the reform in general was positively evaluated by the major players within the Danish public library system. Im Jahr 2007 wurde in Dänemark eine große Strukturreform durchgeführt, wobei die Zahl der Kommunen von 271 auf 98 reduziert wurde. Dieser Reformprozess hatte eine große direkte und indirekte Bedeutung für die weitere Entwicklung der dänischen Volksbibliotheken und ihren Materialbestand, die Ausleihen, Dienstleistungen und Organisationsstrukturen. Das dänische Bibliothekswesen ist durch eine lange Tradition der nationalen Gesetzgebung gekennzeichnet. Obwohl die Reform von 2007 auch bedeutete, dass viele Bibliotheksfilialen geschlossen wurden, beurteilten die wichtigsten Teilnehmer des dänischen Bibliothekssystems die Reform positiv. En 2007 une grande réforme de structure fut conduite au Danemark et qui a réduit le nombre des communes de 271 à 98. Ce procès de réforme eut une grande importance directe et indirecte sur le futur progrès des bibliothèques publiques danoises et leurs fonds, prèts, services et structures d'organisation. Les bibliothèques danoises sont caractérisées par une longue tradition de législation nationale. Bien que la réforme de 2007 entraînât aussi la clôture de beaucoup de filiales de bibliothèques, les membres les plus importants du système de bibliothèques danoises jugeaient la réforme de façon positive.

The author describes the goals and aims, stages and expected results of the National Program for Reading Promotion and Development in Russia. The main attention is paid to the Third National Conference for reading promotion and development which took place on November 2009 in Moscow. A lot of different statistical data about current publishing policy and activity, infrastructure of bookselling and library sectors, reading habits and public literacy are given. Der Autor beschreibt Ziel und Zweck, die Etappen und erhofften Resultate des nationalen Programms zur Leseförderung und -entwicklung in Russland. Das Hauptaugenmerk betrifft die dritte nationale Konferenz zur Leseförderung und -entwicklung, die im November 2009 in Moskau tagte. Es werden viele unterschiedliche Statistik-Daten zur aktuellen Verlagspolitik und -Aktivität, der Infrastruktur des Buchhandels und der Bibliotheken, der Lesegewohnheiten und der allgemeinen Lesefähigkeit gegeben. L'auteur décrit les buts, les étapes et les résultats attendus du programme national pour la promotion et le développement de la lecture en Russie. Le point principal concerne la troisième conférence nationale russe pour la promotion et le développement de la lecture qui a eu lieu en novembre 2009 à Moscou. Beaucoup de dates statistiques divers sont donnés sur la politique et l'activité actuelles des maisons d'édition, de l'infrastructure des librairies et des bibliothèques, les habitudes de la lecture et la capacité de lecture en général.

Die Mannheimer Zentralbibliothek im Stadthaus ist europaweit die erste Bibliothek, die – gestützt durch eine Toolbox des Bundesministeriums für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) – mit Hilfe des Instruments ‚Wissensbilanz – Made in Germany’ eine fokussierte Bestandsaufnahme von immateriellen Besitzständen einer Non-Profit-Organisation durchgeführt hat und so ihre Stärken und Schwächen untersucht. Die Mannheimer Stadtbibliothek sieht sich hier als innovativer Vorreiter im Bereich des kommunalen Wissensmanagements. Der Artikel beschreibt das Vorgehen dieses für Bibliotheken neuen Instruments der prognostischen Stärken-Schwächen-Analyse und stellt erste Konsequenzen für den Arbeitsalltag der Mitarbeitenden der Mannheimer Zentralbibliothek vor. Mannheim Central Library is the first library which transferred the so called “Intellectual Capital Statement – Made in Germany” to Public Libraries: The intellectual capital statement is an instrument for the systematic and structured presentation and development of an institutions intellectual capital. It points out the correlations between organisational goals, business processes, intellectual capital and the business success within a library. The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour, the Fraunhofer IPK and the research group ‘Arbeitskreis Wissensbilanz’ developed a software-application called “Wissensbilanz-Toolbox”. This software supports the intellectual capital reporting procedure of an institution and it enables them to evaluate their corporate specific intellectual capital independently in order to secure their competitive advantage in the knowledge-based business environment.   La Bibliothèque centrale de Mannheim dans l'hôtel de ville est la première bibliothèque en Europe qui ait dressé un inventaire focalisé sur les acquis immatériaux d'une organisation non-profit, soutenu par une boîte à outils «Balance du savoir – Made in Germany» du Ministère fédérale de l'économie et de la technologie, pour analyser les forces et les faiblesses. La Bibliothèque centrale de Mannheim se voit comme l'avant-garde innovateur dans le cadre du management du savoir communal. L'article décrit le procédé de cet instrument nouveau pour bibliothèques de l'analyse des forces – faiblesses pronostiquées et présente des premières conséquences pour le travail quotidien des collaborateurs de la Bibliothèque centrale de Mannheim.

Mit dem Projektseminar „Von der Idee zum Buch“ wird Studierenden der Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin die Möglichkeit gegeben, praktisch an der Entstehung einer Publikation mitzuarbeiten. Die Studierenden lernen verschiedene Aspekte praktischen Arbeitens kennen und bekommen einen Einblick in Bereiche der Verlags-, Öffentlichkeits-, und Lektoratsarbeit. Im Mittelpunkt des Seminars steht das Ziel, ein Buch zu veröffentlichen. The project-course „Turning an idea into a book“ is a chance for students of the Berlin School for Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin to work on the development of a publication. Students learn about the different aspects of practical work and get a view into categories of the work of publishing, public relation and editorial office. The courses spotlight is located on publishing a book. Le projet-séminaire «de l'idée au livre» donne la possibilité aux étudiants des sciences de la bibliothèque et de l'information de l'université Humboldt à Berlin de travailler de manière pratique à la genèse d'une publication. Les étudiants font la connaissance des variables aspects du travail pratique et ils ont un aperçu des domaines des relations publiques, des travails des éditeurs et des lecteurs. Le but du séminaire, c'est de publier un livre.
