Abstract

An introduction to the University of Iowa Tractatus Map, including a brief history, a rationale, and a discussion of plans for future development. That project builds on a pair of subway-style maps of the numbering system used in the Tractatus and the Prototractatus that display those books’ structures. The online map tool is available at: http://tractatus.lib.uiowa.edu/ I will argue that our Tractatus map’s visually compelling presentation of the numbering system of that book delivers on Wittgenstein’s cryptic claim in a letter to his publisher that it is the numbers that “make the book surveyable and clear”. It also has farreaching implications for the interpretation of that text, and its relationship to earlier drafts.
