Abstract
This chapter is a paired reading of the Chinese American writer Yiyun Li’s short stories “Immortality” and “A Sheltered Woman.” “Immortality” is a village community’s mythologizing historiography of the twentieth century. In “A Sheltered Woman,” the protagonist resolves to detach herself from the world and others. The resulting liberty comes however with an existential homelessness. Both stories illustrate the psychological, emotional, and physiological impact of growing up and living in a totalitarian country, and the effects on both individual human beings and whole communities. The stories portray survival strategies that lead to dissociations between public and private, friends and enemies, and self and other, and result in cultural as well as individual states of dissociation and paralysis. Both short stories represent how Yiyun Li’s writings - without being didactic - constitute a contemporary littérature engagée and can be evaluated as counternarratives to China’s dominant historiography.
