11 Kate Chopin (1850–1904)
-
Ina Bergmann
Abstract
Since the rediscovery of her work in the 1970s, Kate Chopin’s short stories have been read as feminist texts. “The Maid of Saint Phillippe” (1892) and “The Story of an Hour” (1894) are examples that illustrate the evolution of Chopin’s writing from feminine to feminist. They depict female protagonists that strive for freedom from social constraints imposed upon women in the nineteenth century. For these women, freedom can only be found in seclusion from society, be it in the American wilderness or in the confinement of their own home. Solitude warrants liberty. Within society, female freedom remains a dream.
