Abstract
N.K. Jemisin’s stories illustrate her political commitment to social justice and diversity. She cannily plays with American literary traditions, from romanticist poetry to the African American and the New Orleans short story, balancing between neo-romanticism, steampunk, and Afrofuturism. In doing so, she explores themes such as the transformative potential of lesbian sexuality, Black consciousness, and the prospects of social and economic justice in a globalized late-capitalist world.
