3 Current Approaches to the American Short Story
-
Michael Basseler
Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to sketch out a broad variety of recent approaches to the American short story. Although short story criticism may not be among the most innovative fields of research in 21st-century literary studies, there have actually been a number of interesting and original critical interventions off the beaten tracks of earlier approaches to the genre. Taking a closer look at the handbooks, essay collections, and monographs on the American short story since 2000, the chapter identifies some of the most prevalent themes, innovative approaches and forms of social and historical contextualization, providing students of the American short story with some guidance and suggestions for further research.
