Abstract

The development of the short story took place as part of the progress towards ‘American literature’ as an organized body of works in the nineteenth century. This chapter unravels the intersections between the short story as an emergent genre and the manifestation of an American national literature. It examines various institutions, agents, and discourses related to literature in particular consideration of the contested concept of the literary canon.
