Abstract

In a broad definition, translation encompasses the mediation of knowledge between (as well as within) different systems. An important but hitherto largely neglected aspect in this respect are illustrations. This chapter examines the role of illustrations in the transfer of knowledge, taking as a case study Istoriia, an encyclopaedia written in Ukrainian and translated into Russian. I argue that it is not only the content of an illustration itself, but also its immediate surroundings, which play a key role in the way we construct interpretative patterns.
