Abstract

An examination of the political caesuras of the Empire from 1105/1106 to 1125 reveals Empirewide trends and makes clear how independently from them the archbishops of Mainz, Cologne and Salzburg acted. Their relationship with Henry IV, Henry V and Lothar III was, apart from the major issues surrounding the Investiture Controversy, also always based on the respective archbishoprics: Adalbert I was freed from captivity in 1115 by the citizens of his metropolis, Frederick I joined an uprising in 1114 that probably originated in the Lower Rhine, Conrad I had to leave the city for years and went into exile because of the prosalic opposition in Salzburg. The archbishops were in a network that included the rulers, but the relationship was tense and difficult for most of the period under consideration. The rapprochements and reconciliations that preceded the Concordat of Worms show the stability of the network, guaranteed by the presence of mediators. The many imprisonments, carried out by Henry V, indicate a break in communication and a rejection of the network. Thanks to the intervention of intermediaries and/or under pressure, the prisoners were released: mediators of the talks that took place around 1120 were probably not to linked to any of the opposing parties but remained - as far as possible - neutral. The three archbishops conciled with Henry V when the fundamental precondition of peace was reached. It is also important to note that the complicated coexistence of the archbishops with the imperial rulers was due to the role they played in networks of different territorial scope, from regional to transimperial.
