Abstract
This paper aims to further analyse the reasons for the representativeness attributed to the Cadalus schism firstly by the publicistic narrative of the late eleventh / early twelfth century, and secondly by the historiography on the Investiturstreit, through the analysis of the networks relations between Cadalus of Parma and Anselm of Lucca before, during and after the schism of 1061. For this purpose, a different approach is adopted for the study of the narrative, chronicle and documentary sources on this issue, in an attempt to enhance the relational and processual dimension of the conflict. It is argued that a configurational analysis of the schism of 1061 can help to focus attention on the main players in this event, on their mutual movements and changes of position, thus allowing for a recontextualisation of the event that disregards any historiographical superstructures.
