Abstract
This article focuses on the relationship between the archbishops of Cologne, Mainz and Milan and the Emperors Henry II and Conrad II, as well as on their position and role in the imperial network from 1018 to 1051. The following aspects are examined: 1) the ruler’s involvement in the appointment of the archbishops and 2) the archbishop’s participation in drafting and enacting the ruling charters, which will be compared to the descriptions in the narrative sources. Thanks to this combined approach we are able to provide a qualitative analysis of the archbishop’s position within the emperors’ network before the time of the Investiture Controversy and, furthermore, a critical review of existing research concepts such as the one of the interveners.
