Abstract
Our knowledge of Ostiglia, a village located in the eastern part of the Po Valley, in the decades around 1100, is greatly increased thanks to an exceptional source: a collection of judicial depositions gathered during a trial in 1151, that tells us the story of the village and the surrounding area starting from the middle of the eleventh century. This is an exceptional guide to the political transformations on local scale. Through the analysis of this source, we can can observe a profound transformation in the structures of local power (and also of its main players), which starts around 1080, coinciding with the outbreak of civil wars connected with the Investiture Controversy, and continues for the following decades.
