Abstract

This case study explores the diocesan schism that occurred in Bologna during the last two decades of the eleventh century, a period characterised as a „schismatic age (schismatisches Zeitalter)“ according to Thomas Kohl’s concept. Despite the limited and challenging sources available, this study deliberately focuses on the missing data in the historical memory of the schism, which can be seen as a form of collective ‚amnesia‘. It seeks to develop a selective figurational analysis of the positions and interdependencies among the local bishops. This study begins by examining the few fragments of memory that exist regarding the schism, which is understood as a profound and divisive conflict within the community. It then looks back at the early twelfth century, specifically the period from 1130, to analyse significant events in the community of Bologna. The forgiveness granted by Henry V to the community for their destruction of the local fortress in 1116 is also taken in consideration. Finally, the study investigates the positions and interdependencies of the bishops before the schism, covering the years from 1030 to 1074. The findings of the study confirm that the schismatic conflict led to a transformation in the figurational dynamics of Bologna. According to recent interpretations, even the bishops of Bologna adjusted their roles, making space at the centre of the political arena for emerging citizen groups, when their influence in this context was recognised. This shift resulted in a complementary relationship between the bishops and these emerging civic groups.
