Abstract
This paper investigates whether the change of the ruling structures in the duchy of Gaeta underwent a significant dynamisation during the period of the so-called Investiture Controversy. The focus is on old and new players as well as the changing political framework. It is argued that the processes of fragmentation, which had already begun long before the Norman takeover, ran parallel to new forms of centralization from the middle of the eleventh century onwards. Describing the changes in the coastal duchy primarily as a consequence of disintegration completed by the Norman rule, is an insufficient explanation. Church and monastic actors were also significantly involved in the transformation process, working towards a profound reorganisation not only of Gaeta, but also of the complex border region of southern Italy, also due to changes in (self-)perceptions.
