22. Shakespeare’s Sonnets (1609)

Abstract

This chapter discusses Shakespeare’s Sonnets (1609) as engaging with a form of love poetry that became intensely popular in England during the 1590s in both manuscript and print. Circulating in restricted coteries of readers while also appearing as a public and popular form, the late sixteenth- and early seventeenthcentury English sonnet stages intimacy and privacy against the backdrop of a partly print-based public sphere. Shakespeare’s sonnets explore love, sexuality and domination through unnamed positions of a speaker, a man he is attached to, a woman they both desire, and a rival poet. The sonnets de-idealize notions of homoerotic attraction, love and friendship in response to a society moving from feudalism to a national, pre-absolutist administrative state, and to the limits of a Petrarchan poetics of praise. Accordingly, the sonnets’ semantic, rhetorical and logical structure registers constantly shifting and context-dependent meanings and functions of language. The chapter closes with a survey of editions and the critical reception of the sonnets.
