22 History of Galician Lexicon
-
Gonzalo Navaza
Abstract
This chapter describes the basic historical components of the Galician lexicon. Within the part of the Galician lexicon that originates from Latin, we shall differentiate between what is common Romance, specific to Hispanic Romance or exclusive to Galician, or Galician and Portuguese. Most of the substratal part of the Galician lexicon is recognisably Indo-European or specifically Celtic. The Germanic component, introduced by the Suebi and Visigoths and replenished centuries later via French influence, and the Arabic component, with a weaker presence in Galician than in neighboring languages, complete the picture of Galician’s lexical heritage. The chapter ends with an examination of the process of lexical standardisation in present- day Galician.
