Abstract

This chapter presents the position occupied by Galician in Romance linguistics studies and characterises this language in comparison to the closest Ibero-Romance varieties. The first part gives an account of the research conducted on Galician within the field of Romance studies, from its beginnings in the 19th century to the present day. This section considers how the treatment of Galician has evolved in line with theoretical changes in the discipline and in accordance with shifts in the language’s social and official status. The second part reviews the linguistic similarities and differences between Galician and Astur-Leonese, European Portuguese, and Castilian Spanish, taking into account phonetic and morphosyntactic elements.
