Abstract

The history of the constitution of a standard language model for Galician began in the nineteenth century and a written norm was not made official or social until almost the end of the twentieth century. In this study, a historical overview is provided of the different proposals made for the written codification of Galician over the last two hundred years. Firstly, the conventions adopted by nineteenth-century writers and grammarians, who sought to construct a model for written language based on Spanish, are reviewed. This model continued to be modified in subsequent decades through different proposals which vary and combine the differentialist trend, the respect for popular speech, and the approach to standard Portuguese. The current standard variety of Galician is based upon this tradition and an avowed intention to respect the language spoken by the community.
