This chapter is in the book Manual of Galician Linguistics

Abstract

In this chapter the phonetic changes which led from Latin to contemporary Galician are set out synthetically, with remarks regarding the consequences that such changes implied for the phonological system. The chapter is organized chronologically, presenting and situating in their sociolinguistic context the transformations that can be dated to between the beginning of Latinisation and the end of the medieval period (second century B.C.-ca. fifteenth century A.D.), in Middle Galician (sixteenth to eighteenth centuries) and in contemporary Galician.
