Abstract

This chapter reviews theoretical and applied research into terminology and neology. An overview of two theoretical and methodological aspects of terminology will be followed by an analysis of the present state of Galician terminology, examining institutional aspects which account for the situation of terminographic research and production; the main features of the research (corpus-based terminology, the representation of specialist knowledge, socioterminological orientation, the presence of terminology in dictionaries); and an analysis of Galician terminographic production with special attention to the most recent period. Turning to neology, a few theoretical observations will be followed by a review of studies on the typology of neologisms, the relationship between neologism creation and dictionaries, the evaluation of neologicity (for both general and specialist terms) and analysis of possible dependencies between Galician, Spanish and Portuguese neologism creation. The chapter will conclude with a review of future challenges for theoretical and applied research into neology and terminology.
