18 Social History of the Galician Language
-
Henrique Monteagudo
Abstract
This chapter presents the historical constitution process of the Galician linguistic system, as a set of specific linguistic characteristics associated with a particular territory and a specific population. The Galician language experienced two main moments of development, separated by a period of subordination. The first one took place in the 12th-15th centuries and resulted in the individualisation of Galician Romance. Lacking institutions and power centres to enable its autonomous development, Galician fell very early into the Castilian orbit; from the beginning of the 16th century, it lost its written use and was displaced by Castilian as a language of power and culture. From the mid-19th century Rexurdimento on, however, Galician has been undergoing a process of resurgence.
