4 Word Formation
-
Ernesto González Seoane
Abstract
This chapter presents a basic description of word formation in contemporary Galician, focusing on the three most productive processes, namely, affixation (with specific sections for suffixation and parasynthesis, evaluative suffixation and prefixation), conversion and compounding. Within each of these sections and sub-sections the information is organised taking into account, in the first place, the morphosyntactic class of the output word (formation of nouns, adjectives and verbs), secondly, the word base class (denominal, deadjectival and deverbal formations), thirdly, the semantic notion conveyed through the output word. The study also tackles the less productive processes such as reduplication, clipping, blending, acronymy and univerbation.
