In former socialist countries – and Slovenia as one of the former Yugoslav republics is no exception here – many changes have occurred over the last years. While old narrative forms have been adapted to suit the new circumstances, some new narrative forms have appeared as well. At present, the concept of folk narrative in Slovenia can be considered according to the following six conceptual frameworks: original contexts and functions; folk narrative as part of the cultural landscape; folklore groups, cultural societies, and tourist events; folk narrative performance; application of folk narrative in art; contemporary legends and narratives in electronic and mass media. The latter, of course, require new research approaches and methods. Résumé Dans les anciens pays socialistes tels que la Slovénie, autrefois une des républiques de la Yougoslavie, de grands changements se sont déroulés pendant les dernières années. De nouvelles formes narratives sont apparues tandis que les vieilles formes se sont adaptées aux nouvelles conditions. Aujourd'hui la littérature populaire en Slovénie peut être considérée au cadre des six catégories conceptuelles suivantes: contextes et fonctions d'origine; la littérature populaire comme partie constituante du milieu culturel; groupes folkloriques, associations culturelles et événements organisés pour les touristes; performance narrative; adaptations artistiques de la littérature narrative populaire; récits et légendes contemporains dans les médias électroniques et les moyens de diffusion. L'investigation de ces derniers exige, naturellement, de nouvelles approches et méthodes de recherche. Zusammenfassung In den ehemaligen sozialistischen Staaten, darunter auch Slowenien als einer der früheren Republiken Jugoslawiens, ereigneten sich in den letzten Jahren viele Veränderungen. Es entstanden neue Erzählformen, während die alten sich den neuen Verhältnissen anpaßten. Heute kann man das volkstümliche Erzählen in Slowenien vor allem im Rahmen der sechs folgenden konzeptuellen Kategorien betrachten: Volkserzählungen im ursprünglichen Kontext und in ihrer ursprünglichen Funktion; Volkserzählungen als Teil der kulturellen Landschaft; Folkloregruppen, Kulturvereine und touristische Veranstaltungen; die Performanz von Volkserzählungen; die Verwendung von Volkserzählungen in der Kunst; zeitgenössisches Erzählen und moderne Sagen in den elektronischen sowie den Massenmedien. Für die Erforschung der letzten Kategorie sind natürlich neue Forschungsansätze und Methoden notwendig.

In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Glastonbury (a small town in the south west of England) has become widely known as a centre of contemporary spirituality and religious experimentation. However, it has long been connected in vernacular tradition and religion with Celtic myth. This article explores the role of Celtic myth – and myths about ‘Celticity’ – in vernacular religion and contemporary spirituality in Glastonbury, the ways in which Celtic myth has been utilised in relation to different forms of historical and contemporary religion, and the manner in which Arthur has been eclipsed by Bridget in Glastonbury in recent years. These examples demonstrate changing trends in contemporary spirituality, and the importance of vernacular culture and religion in our understanding of twenty-first century religiosity. Résumé Aux XX e et XXI e siècles, Glastonbury (une petite ville au sud-ouest de l'Angleterre) est devenue célèbre en tant que centre de spiritualité contemporaine et d'expérimentation religieuse. Cependant, des traditions et croyances vernaculaires l'associent depuis longtemps avec le mythe celtique. Le présent article explore le rôle du mythe celtique – et des mythes sur la <celticité> – dans la religion vernaculaire et la spiritualité contemporaine à Glastonbury, l'usage qu'on a fait du mythe celtique par rapport à différentes formes de religion historique et contemporaine ainsi que le fait que dans ces dernières années Arthur à été éclipsé par Bridget à Glastonbury. Ces exemples montrent des tendances changeantes dans la spiritualité contemporaine et soulignent l'importance de la culture et religion vernaculaires pour la compréhension de la religiosité du XXI e siècle. Zusammenfassung Glastonbury, eine kleine Stadt im Südwesten England, wurde im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert als Zentrum zeitgenössischer Spiritualität und religiöser Experimente bekannt. In der einheimischen Tradition und Religion ist sie jedoch schon lange mit dem keltischen Mythos verbunden. Der Aufsatz untersucht die Rolle des keltischen Mythos – und der Mythen über ‚Keltizität‘ – in volkstümlichen religiösen Formen und zeitgenössischer Spiritualität in Glastonbury, den Gebrauch des keltischen Mythos in bezug auf verschiedene Formen historischer und zeitgenössischer Religion, und die Art und Weise, wie Arthur in den letzten Jahren in Glastonbury von Bridget verdrängt wurde. Diese Beispiele machen wechselnde Trends in der zeitgenössischen Spiritualität und die Bedeutung einheimischer Kultur und Religion für unser Verständnis von Religiosität im 21. Jahrhundert deutlich.

During my fieldwork in Frassinoro, a small village in the Apennines in the North of Italy, I was lucky enough to meet people who could provide invaluable insights into their own narrative tradition. By means of direct quotations from the interviewees' comments, this paper aims to give voice to these spontaneous meta-commentaries, in particular to those dealing with attitudes towards the uses and functions of traditional narrative. Résumé Pendant mes recherches de terrain à Frassinoro, un petit village des Apennins au nord de l'Italie, j'ai eu la chance de rencontrer des gens qui m'ont fourni des renseignements précieux relatifs à leur propre tradition narrative. En se servant des propos de ces informateurs, le présent article donne la parole à des méta-commentaires spontanés, en particulier à ceux qui concernent les attitudes envers les usages et fonctions des contes traditionnels. Zusammenfassung Bei meinen Feldforschungen in Frassinoro, einem kleinen norditalienischen Dorf im Apennin, hatte ich das Glück, Menschen zu treffen, die mir wertvolle Einsichten in ihre eigene Erzähltradition verschafften. Der Artikel läßt meine Informanten mit einigen spontanen Metakommentaren selbst zu Wort kommen, besonders solchen, in denen es um Haltungen in bezug auf Gebrauch und Funktion der Erzählüberlieferung geht.

The paper intends to investigate mobile communication as a medium conveying folklore texts as well as the folkloric features of messages sent via mobile communication (SMS) and attempts to systematize folklore genres in SMS. Short message sending service belongs to secondary or electronic literacy, which in contemporary practice of communication is almost as popular as e-mail correspondence. Preliminary issues and problems of textual analysis arising from a folkloristic point of view are the following: Which wellknown folklore genres emerge in SMS texts? Are there any new genres, and if so, in what respect do these genres differ from traditional ones? The corpus of texts on which the research project is based consists of three types of text collections. In practice, SMS does not constitute a genre, as the SMS corpus used consists of heterogeneous texts, among which folkloric and non-folkloric texts can be found. Some of the SMS texts can be assigned to traditional types of folklore genres (jokes, proverbs, rhymed greetings related to festive occasions, etc.), whereas others such as funny-tricky texts or reduced chain letters comprising only the initial and closure units seem to refer to new genres. Résumé L'article se propose d'étudier la communication par SMS en tant que propagatrice de textes folkloriques ainsi que les traits qui caractérisent des textes envoyés par SMS comme folklore, en essayant également de les systématiser suivant leur appartenance à des genres folkloriques. SMS fait part des pratiques littéraires secondaires ou électroniques et est actuellement presque aussi populaire que la correspondance par courrier électronique. Les questions préliminaires et les problèmes concernant l'analyse des textes qui se posent sont les suivants: Lesquels des genres folkloriques connus aparaîssent dans les textes SMS? Est-ce qu'il y aussi de nouveaux genres, et dans ce cas, comment se distinguent-ils des genres traditionnels? Les collections de textes qui forment la base de ce projet de recherche sont de trois types différents. En pratique, les SMS ne constituent pas de genre étant donné que le corpus utilisé est composé de textes hétérogènes, parmi lesquels on trouve des textes folkloriques et non-folkloriques. Quelques-uns des messages SMS peuvent être classés parmi les genres folkloriques traditionnels (plaisanteries, proverbes, poésie de circonstance, etc.) tandis que d'autres comme des petits textes malins et des lettres boule de neige réduites aux formules d'introduction et de clôture semblent se référer à de nouveaux genres. Zusammenfassung Der Artikel untersucht SMS als Medium der Verbreitung von Folkloretexten sowie die folkloristischen Züge von SMS-Texten und versucht, die in SMS erscheinenden Folkloregattungen zu systematisieren. SMS ist Teil einer sekundären oder elektronischen Nutzung der Schrift und ist gegenwärtig beinahe ebenso beliebt wie e-mail. Vom folkloristischen Standpunkt aus stellen sich folgende vorläufige Fragen und Probleme der Textanalyse: Welche bekannten Folkloregattungen finden sich in SMS-Texten? Gibt es neue Gattungen, und wenn ja, inwiefern unterscheiden sie sich von den traditionellen? Das Textkorpus, auf dem das Forschungsprojekt beruht, besteht aus drei verschiedenen Typen von Textsammlungen. SMS selbst bildet keine eigene Gattung, wie sich an der Heterogenität der untersuchten Texte zeigt, unter denen sich folkloristische wie nichtfolkloristische Texte befinden. Einige SMS-Texte können traditionellen Folkloregattungen zugerechnet werden (Witze, Sprichwörter, gereimte Grüße zu festlichen Anlässen etc.), während andere wie witzige Texte mit trickreicher Wendung oder auf Eingangs- und Schlußformeln reduzierte Kettenbriefe auf neue Gattungen hinzuweisen scheinen.

Greek Popularmärchen , i.e. cheap, small booklets of tales, differ from ‘good’ editions of folktales with respect to production, distribution, reception as well as contents. They have elements in common with popular novels. The ‘dialogue’ between the two prose genres is made evident on the linguistic level (shifting from standard to everyday language, restricted vocabulary, use of colloquial expressions, adjectives and adverbs, diminutive and superlative forms, metaphors and comparisons, dialogues and direct speech) as well as on the aesthetic level (sentimentalisation, moralisation, dichotomisation and amplifications of the stories). Résumé Les Popularmärchen grecs, c.-à-d. les petits cahiers de contes bon marché, qui diffèrent des <bonnes> éditions de contes par rapport à la production, distribution, réception ainsi que leur contenu, présentent des similitudes marquées avec les romans populaires. A partir de traits linguistiques (changements d'un langage élevé à un langage quotidien, vocabulaire limité, locutions courantes, accumulation d'adjectifs et d'adverbes, formes diminutives et superlatives, comparaisons, métaphores et dialogues) et esthétiques (sentimentalisation, moralisation, dichotomisation, amplification du contenu, etc.), il a été possible de mettre en évidence un <dialogue> entre ces deux genres.

The research interests of the Brothers Grimm with regard to popular poetry concern a conceptual field of things termed ‘poetic’, ‘natural’, ‘archaic’, ‘nibelungian’, ‘German’, and ‘indigenous’. Related ideas are not only found in the Household Tales but also in other Grimm texts embodying the idea of the forest. The present article attempts to show that the image of natural poetry compared to the perishing woods by J. Grimm and the image of artistic poetry becoming ‘indigenous’ in W. Grimm's writings have preceded the compilation of the Household Tales which was greatly influenced by these conceptions. Résumé Les intérêts de recherche des frères Grimm relatifs à la poésie populaire concernent des notions comme <poétique>, <naturel>, <archaïque>, <nibelungien>, <allemand> et <indigène>. Les idées qui s'y rapportent ne se trouvent pas seulement dans leurs contes mais aussi dans plusieurs autres textes sous forme de l'idée de la forêt. Le présent article se propose de montrer que l'image de la poésie naturelle comparée aux forêts qui périssent chez J. Grimm et l'image de la poésie artistique devenue <indigène> chez W. Grimm ont précédé la compilation de leurs contes et ont influencé décisivement leur travail à cette œuvre.

The paper examines established terminology for literary units and relationships in oral literature, and the imprecise use of terms in scholarly literature. It tries to make the terminology more precise and probes into the nature of the concepts and the relationships between them. Résumé Le présent article examine la terminologie établie pour des unités littéraires et ses rapports en littérature orale ainsi que l'usage imprécis qu'en fait la littérature savante. On essayera de préciser la terminologie en scrutant la nature des conceptions et les relations entre elles. Zusammenfassung Der Artikel untersucht die Terminologie für literarische Einheiten und ihre Beziehungen in der mündlichen Überlieferung sowie den ungenauen Gebrauch der Begriffe in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur. Es wird versucht, die Terminologie zu präzisieren und das Wesen der zugrundeliegenden Konzepte und ihrer gegenseitigen Beziehungen zu ergründen.

Folktale, especially in its oral form, is the progenitor of any tales told in a society. Hence its impact on the culture of a nation is seminal. Against this backdrop, this paper, in the first place, attempts to examine some of the narrative politics that must have gone into the making of folktales, which at the surface level sport an innocent and pleasing outlook. Secondly, by way of studying a selection of Ethiopian folktales, the paper uncovers the presence of logocentrism and a priori binary opposition being at work in Ethiopian folktales. These two elements attempt to endorse and validate the ‘given’ subservient position of women in society. The paper concludes that apparently innocent folktales with their latent prejudices, when fed to the young in a routine way, can warp their mind with respect to the relationship of women and men. Résumé Le conte populaire, surtout sous sa forme orale, est l'ancêtre de tout récit circulant dans une société donnée. C'est pourquoi son influence sur toute culture nationale est décisive. Sur ce fond, le présent article se propose d'examiner d'abord des aspects de la politique narrative qui a sans doute joué un rôle dans la création des contes populaires, à première vue si innocents et charmants. Deuxièmement, en étudiant un choix de contes éthiopiens, l'article dévoile la présence d'un logocentrisme et d'oppositions binaires existant a priori. A partir de ces deux éléments, on essayera de mettre en évidence la position inférieure <donnée> de la femme dans la société. La conclusion à en tirer serait que de nourrir la jeunesse de ces contes populaires apparemment innocents mais contenant des préjudices latents peut produire des effets négatifs sur les relations entre les sexes. Zusammenfassung Volkserzählungen, besonders in ihrer mündlichen Form, sind die Vorläufer aller Erzählungen in einer Gesellschaft. Ihr Einfluß auf die Kultur einer Nation ist daher groß. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird zunächst versucht, Aspekte der erzählerischen Politik zu erhellen, die in die Entstehung von Volkserzählungen einfließen, auch wenn diese bei oberflächlicher Betrachtung unschuldig und ansprechend wirken. In zweiter Linie zeigt die Untersuchung ausgewählter äthiopischer Erzählungen deren Logozentrismus sowie binäre Oppositionen, die in ihnen a priori wirksam sind. Auf dieser Grundlage soll der ‚naturgegebenen‘ Unterlegenheit der Frau in der Gesellschaft nachgegangen werden. Zum Schluß ist festzuhalten, daß anscheinend unschuldige, jedoch mit latenten Vorurteilen behaftete Volkserzählungen, die routinemäßig an die Jugend weitergegeben werden, sich negativ auf die Beziehungen zwischen den Geschlechtern auswirken können.

On the occasion of the 60 th anniversary of the first Soviet deportation in Estonia (1941), the Estonian President Lennart Meri (1929–2006), himself a historian and writer, made an appeal to the pupils to collect memories of the deportations, his intention being to acquaint them with the history of their families and their country. The product of these efforts (Mõisnik/Helme 2001) contains records by fifty pupils, mainly the memories of their grandparents: childhood memories from Siberia of those who were lucky enough to survive these sufferings. This book contains only one of several perspectives of the Estonian memories of Siberia – it tells how deported children lived through these troubles. They mostly tell their personal experiences; there are only few generalizations. Adults' experiences were still harder and went deeper. Résumé A l'occasion du 60 e anniversaire de la première déportation soviétique en Estonie (1941), le président estonien Lennart Meri (1929–2006), historien et écrivain lui-même, appelait les élèves à recueillir des mémoires de déportation, son intention étant de leur faire connaître l'histoire de leurs familles et de leur patrie. Le produit de ces efforts (Mõisnik/Helme 2001) contient les textes de 50 élèves, surtout les mémoires de leurs grands-parents: les souvenirs d'enfance en Sibérie racontés par ceux qui avaient la chance de survivre les souffrances. Le livre n'offre qu'une seule parmi plusieurs perspectives des mémoires sibériennes des Estoniens – l'expérience vécue des enfants déportés. Ils racontent plutôt ce qui leur est arrivé personnellement; il y a peu de généralisations. Les expériences des adultes étaient encores plus dures et les ont marqués encore plus profondément.

Nachdem sich die ersten drei Tagungen der Kommission für Erzählforschung mit Standortbestimmung des Fachs, Interkulturalität und Intermedialität bzw. Medienwandel befaßt hatten, wurde in Bautzen der Fokus auf die Relation von Minderheiten und Mehrheiten in der Erzählforschung gelegt. Dabei ließen sich drei zentrale Themenkomplexe ausmachen: Darstellungen von Minderheiten aus der Perspektive der Mehrheit; Selbstwahrnehmungen von Minderheiten; die Funktion des Fremden bzw. von entsprechenden Stereotypen in Erzähltexten.

Reimund Kvideland was born on 28 January 1935 in Højland in Western Norway. He died unexpectedly on 6 June 2006 from a heart attack when he was waiting for a bus in Paradis, the suburb of Bergen where he lived. Few Scandinavian folklorists have developed such an international network as Reimund Kvideland. He had especially good contacts with German scholars. His university studies took him not only to Oslo and Copenhagen but also to Frankfurt am Main, and his mother in law was German. As a folklorist he was strongly influenced by scholars who had published in German, such as Ernst Klusen, Otto Brinkmann, Gottfried Henßen and Linda Dégh.

Am 29. Dezember ist Lutz Röhrich, Emeritus der Universität zu Freiburg im Breisgau, im Alter von 84 Jahren verstorben. Wir trauern um einen der Großen unseres Fachs, den Erzählforscher, Literaturwissenschaftler und Volkskundler, der mit seinen zahlreichen Werken mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert lang die deutschsprachige und internationale Erzählforschung maßgeblich bereichert hat. Auf zahlreichen Gebieten hat er neue Forschungen angeregt, Grundlagenwissen vermittelt und in einer beeindruckenden Fülle von Beiträgen zentrale Fachfragen angesprochen: Oftmals hat er Entwicklungstendenzen der Erforschung von Sagen, Märchen, Sprichwörtern, Redensarten, Volksliedern, Schwänken und Witzen vorweggenommen. Ungeachtet der Dynamisierung von Wissen, des Wechsels schnellebiger Methoden und Theorien werden diese Werke und Beiträge ihren Wert behalten und weiterdauern. Eine solche Vielseitigkeit des Schaffens, das sowohl die materielle Volkskultur als auch die historische und rezente Narrativistik in all ihren Erscheinungsformen einschließlich der Lied- und Balladenforschung und ikonographische Zeugnisse umfaßt, ist bei der heutigen Forschergeneration nur selten anzutreffen.
