Folklore and Mobile Communication. SMS and Folklore Text Research

Abstract
The paper intends to investigate mobile communication as a medium conveying folklore texts as well as the folkloric features of messages sent via mobile communication (SMS) and attempts to systematize folklore genres in SMS. Short message sending service belongs to secondary or electronic literacy, which in contemporary practice of communication is almost as popular as e-mail correspondence. Preliminary issues and problems of textual analysis arising from a folkloristic point of view are the following: Which wellknown folklore genres emerge in SMS texts? Are there any new genres, and if so, in what respect do these genres differ from traditional ones? The corpus of texts on which the research project is based consists of three types of text collections. In practice, SMS does not constitute a genre, as the SMS corpus used consists of heterogeneous texts, among which folkloric and non-folkloric texts can be found. Some of the SMS texts can be assigned to traditional types of folklore genres (jokes, proverbs, rhymed greetings related to festive occasions, etc.), whereas others such as funny-tricky texts or reduced chain letters comprising only the initial and closure units seem to refer to new genres.
Résumé
L'article se propose d'étudier la communication par SMS en tant que propagatrice de textes folkloriques ainsi que les traits qui caractérisent des textes envoyés par SMS comme folklore, en essayant également de les systématiser suivant leur appartenance à des genres folkloriques. SMS fait part des pratiques littéraires secondaires ou électroniques et est actuellement presque aussi populaire que la correspondance par courrier électronique. Les questions préliminaires et les problèmes concernant l'analyse des textes qui se posent sont les suivants: Lesquels des genres folkloriques connus aparaîssent dans les textes SMS? Est-ce qu'il y aussi de nouveaux genres, et dans ce cas, comment se distinguent-ils des genres traditionnels? Les collections de textes qui forment la base de ce projet de recherche sont de trois types différents. En pratique, les SMS ne constituent pas de genre étant donné que le corpus utilisé est composé de textes hétérogènes, parmi lesquels on trouve des textes folkloriques et non-folkloriques. Quelques-uns des messages SMS peuvent être classés parmi les genres folkloriques traditionnels (plaisanteries, proverbes, poésie de circonstance, etc.) tandis que d'autres comme des petits textes malins et des lettres boule de neige réduites aux formules d'introduction et de clôture semblent se référer à de nouveaux genres.
Zusammenfassung
Der Artikel untersucht SMS als Medium der Verbreitung von Folkloretexten sowie die folkloristischen Züge von SMS-Texten und versucht, die in SMS erscheinenden Folkloregattungen zu systematisieren. SMS ist Teil einer sekundären oder elektronischen Nutzung der Schrift und ist gegenwärtig beinahe ebenso beliebt wie e-mail. Vom folkloristischen Standpunkt aus stellen sich folgende vorläufige Fragen und Probleme der Textanalyse: Welche bekannten Folkloregattungen finden sich in SMS-Texten? Gibt es neue Gattungen, und wenn ja, inwiefern unterscheiden sie sich von den traditionellen? Das Textkorpus, auf dem das Forschungsprojekt beruht, besteht aus drei verschiedenen Typen von Textsammlungen. SMS selbst bildet keine eigene Gattung, wie sich an der Heterogenität der untersuchten Texte zeigt, unter denen sich folkloristische wie nichtfolkloristische Texte befinden. Einige SMS-Texte können traditionellen Folkloregattungen zugerechnet werden (Witze, Sprichwörter, gereimte Grüße zu festlichen Anlässen etc.), während andere wie witzige Texte mit trickreicher Wendung oder auf Eingangs- und Schlußformeln reduzierte Kettenbriefe auf neue Gattungen hinzuweisen scheinen.
