Leibniz on Justice for Future Generations

Leibniz’s definition of justice as the charity of the wise suggests obligations to future generations, but Leibniz seldom discusses intergenerational ethics directly. This paper examines what Leibniz’s theory of justice entails for intergenerational ethics by addressing both why we have obligations to the future and what those obligations require. Drawing on Leibniz’s Dialogue entre Theophile et Polidore (1679) and related writings, I reconstruct two arguments Leibniz uses to ground obligations to the common good and to posterity: (1) “the temporal horizon argument” focused on divine recompense and (2) “the perpetual citizenship argument” focused on the commonwealth of minds. I argue that while the first argument implicitly includes care for posterity, the second makes such obligations clearer and more compelling by establishing a transgenerational moral community. The paper concludes by outlining a Leibnizian framework for intergenerational justice, showing how Leibniz balances his commitment to the present with his commitment to progress.

Aristotle claims that in making an animal, nature acts like a “good housekeeper” who “is accustomed to throw out nothing from which it is possible to make something useful” (744b16–17). How does nature act when it “make[s] something useful” in these cases – and does it differ from other ways it acts? I defend two main claims. The first is that Meteor. 4.2’s distinction between two sorts of ‘concoction’ processes offers an underappreciated source of evidence for answering this question. My second claim concerns the nature of those processes and the ends they realize. While they are both the ends of their respective types of concoction, they differ in that some essential (process-defining) features of the second end – but not the first – are supplied by what the capacities of the “underlying” patient (on which the agent acts) are for. The result is a distinction between two kinds of end-directed efficient causation.

Rethinking Perfection: Crusius’ Critique of the Idea of the Best of All Possible Worlds

This paper explores Christian August Crusius’ critique of the ‘Best of All Possible Worlds’ (BPW) theory, primarily associated with Leibniz and Wolff, as presented in his Entwurf der nothwendigen Vernunft-Wahrheiten . The analysis begins by summarizing the BPW theory and its distinctive treatments by Leibniz, Wolff, and Crusius. The core of the paper examines three strands of Crusius’ critique. First (C1), Crusius challenges the BPW’s coherence, arguing that worlds cannot exhibit absolute perfection due to the inexhaustible possibilities of greater perfection. Second (C2), Crusius contends that even if a ‘best world’ exists, its identification is inherently unprovable, given the indifference of means to divine ends. Finally (C3), Crusius reconceptualizes possible worlds as flexible, dynamic systems shaped by free agents, thereby rendering the static BPW model untenable. This paper evaluates Crusius’ arguments against both Leibnizian and Wolffian systems, highlighting Crusius’ innovations in modal metaphysics and his commitment to divine and creaturely freedom.

Adorno’s Critique of Fichte’s Idealism: An Appraisal

This article challenges Adorno’s characterization of Fichte’s idealism as an extreme form of identity thinking that entails complete human domination of nature. Its argument consists of two main stages. First, Fichte’s idealism will be shown to explain the possibility of the type of critical subject that Adorno presupposes in such a way that a certain primacy must be accorded to the subject in its relation to the object. Second, a distinction between two levels of inquiry and presentation – the transcendental level and the historical empirical level – will be drawn. This distinction is applied to the concept of a relation between the subject or ‘I’ and the object or ‘not-I’ in such a way as to (1) relate this concept to the type of ‘historico-practical’ concept already introduced with reference to the concept of enlightenment and (2) avoid a too literal interpretation of those passages in Fichte’s writings concerning the relationship between the human mind and nature that appear to justify Adorno’s characterization of his idealism.

Kant scholars have tended to treat his theory of empirical concepts as monolithic. Against this tendency, I show that Kant systematically distinguishes between two kinds of empirical concepts: ‘concepts of experience,’ on the one hand, and ‘given empirical concepts,’ on the other. I develop an interpretation of this distinction on which given empirical concepts, unlike their experiential counterparts, represent intrinsic features of subjective sensations, in this respect resembling the ‘phenomenal concepts’ invoked in the contemporary philosophy of mind. I go on to show that appreciating this distinction yields a novel account of Kant’s infamous distinction between judgments of perception and experience.

Kant on Transcendental Illusion and the Argument from Spinozism

In the Critique of Practical Reason , Kant argues that rejection of the ideality of space and time leads, via some additional assumptions, to Spinozism. Understanding this ambitious argument requires understanding, inter alia, what Kant means by ‘Spinozism,’ what assumptions figure in the argument, and how these assumptions are supposed to be connected to the ideality of space and time. While my interpretation differs from others on numerous points, one crucial difference lies in my account of the key assumptions. As I argue, Kant takes them to arise naturally from human reason itself. The most crucial and substantive among them concern reason’s naturally formed Ideas of, respectively, absolute space, absolute time, and God. More precisely, Kant takes these claims to be products of a natural transcendental illusion, and he holds that human reason under the spell of transcendental realism is unable to expose them as illusory and unwarranted.

Hugo Grotius on the Loose Obligation of Natural Law

This paper focuses on the development of a concept that profoundly shapes the legal and moral philosophy in the early modern period: Hugo Grotius’ notion of loose obligation, which registers an ought-claim of natural law with a distinct binding force. Loose obligation differs from obligation of natural law strictly speaking insofar as it is non-actionable; but loose obligation also differs from supererogatory counsel insofar as it is non-optional. The notion of loose obligation becomes one pillar of the modern natural law school owing to Pufendorf’s popularization; but since Pufendorf’s reconstruction, its territory is so expanded that it encroaches upon the realm counsel used to occupy. Reexamining Grotius’ conceptual architectonics and its reception helps us see how the ‘jural’ outlook of modern moral philosophy takes shape.

Miracles, Metaphysics, and Method in Wolff and Kant

Kant’s critical procedure aims to determine the conditions and boundaries of reason’s use in synthetic a priori cognition through an antecedent critique of reason. The prevailing view maintains that his arch-dogmatic predecessor, Christian Wolff, fell short of the critical procedure because he overlooked the possibility of synthetic truth altogether. I first argue that Wolff in fact accepts synthetic truths. On his miracle account of synthetic truth, miracles would provide grounds of synthetic truths. His rejection of synthetic a priori cognition instead depends on this account of synthetic truth and his analysis of the conditions on a priori cognition. Wolff therefore comes closer to the critical procedure than commonly supposed. But I then argue that Wolff’s miracle account of synthetic truth precludes an antecedent critique of reason. By extension, Kant’s critical procedure is made possible not merely by his introduction of synthetic truths, but by his naturalization of them.

This paper examines Aristotle’s account of scientific knowledge through demonstration in Posterior Analytics , challenging the prevailing view that he excludes sensible particulars from demonstrative knowledge. I argue that Aristotle’s conception of demonstration includes not only unqualified demonstrations but also what I call ‘qualified’ demonstrations, which can have definite sensible particulars as subjects. These demonstrations yield knowledge that meets Aristotle’s central requirements for knowledge, albeit in a qualified way. Although qualified knowledge falls short of unqualified knowledge, it is nevertheless genuine demonstrative knowledge. I further argue that unqualified knowledge entails potential knowledge of a given particular, which is actualized by applying it to a particular at hand. Qualified demonstrations allow us to apply demonstrative knowledge to the sensible particulars around us.

It’s not that Simple: An Objectivist Account of Spinoza on God’s Essence

A central objection to objectivist interpretations of Spinoza’s theory of attributes is their alleged inconsistency with his commitment to the simplicity of God’s essence. This paper offers a novel response to this objection. I begin by outlining two main arguments for the claim that, for Spinoza, God’s essence must be simple: his alignment with a longstanding tradition that treats simplicity as a necessary divine property, and his endorsement of the principle that parts are by nature prior to their wholes. I then introduce a distinction, available within Spinoza’s framework, between integral and metaphysical parts. I argue that while Spinoza is committed to the view that God’s essence cannot have integral parts, he is not committed to denying it metaphysical parts. This reading not only addresses the simplicity objection but also clarifies Spinoza’s definition of ‘attribute’ and strengthens the case for both structural and constitutive forms of objectivism.

From Hegel to Kant: Steinthal’s Evolving Reading of Humboldt

The paper aims to shed light on Heymann Steinthal’s ambiguous relationship to Humboldt. Examining the development of Steinthal’s interpretations and judgments of Humboldt’s work, the paper distinguishes three phases of this relationship. In the first, from the 1840s, Steinthal read Humboldt through the lens of Hegel’s philosophy and criticised the residual Kantianism in his work. In the second phase, from the 1850s to the 1870s, Steinthal’s growing interest in psychology gradually led him to develop a more positive evaluation of Kant’s work and to distance himself from Humboldt and Hegel, accusing them of dualism and the creation of hypostases. In the final phase, in the 1880s, work on the edition of Humboldt’s writings and a personal crisis led him to shift the focus of his inquiries to ethical themes and Kant’s practical philosophy. As a result, Steinthal reconsidered the significance of Humboldt’s philosophy, now highlighting its Kantian basis.

Images or Being? A Non-representationalist reading of true logoi in Plato’s Sophist

In this paper I address a very precise question emerging from Plato’s Sophist : what is the relation between the nature of images and the way declarative statements function? The scholarship has either moved from the assumption that both true and false statements are images of different types or asserted that this assumption is not convincing. I will give a twofold argument. Firstly, I will provide a novel account of the pros and cons of associating images and statements, concluding that for Plato if statements are false, they are images, whereas if true, they are not images. Secondly, I will discuss whether true statements are non-imagistic representations and argue that there is room for thinking that Plato has a very peculiar theory of truth such that true statements do not just represent reality or being, but rather they make being manifest to the thinking soul.

According to the orthodox interpretation of Zeno’s plurality paradoxes defended by Platonists, these arguments indirectly defend Parmenidean monism by showing that things are not many. But Simplicius, and the various other orthodox interpreters whom he discusses, were aware of and attempted to undermine competing ‘heterodox’ interpretations, which were prominent in the Peripatetic tradition, according to which some of Zeno’s arguments pose a threat to, or even specifically target, Parmenides. I argue that our surviving Peripatetic reports according to which Zeno challenged the idea that any being qualifies as a 'one' are credible and that attempts by ancient orthodox interpreters to accommodate these heterodox reports are not successful.

The Enquiry Interpretation of Hume’s Sensible Knave

Predominantly, previous interpretations of Hume’s discussion of the sensible knave embrace the following three claims: (1) that Hume raises the topic of the knave to respond to the ‘why be just?’ question; (2) that Hume’s discussion of the knave extends the theory of justice and moral psychology developed within the Treatise ; and (3) that Hume’s reply to the knave is unsatisfactory. In this paper, I develop an interpretation of the knave passage that draws exclusively on the second Enquiry and shows that Hume’s discussion of the knave follows consistently from the conclusions Hume draws within it. Beyond challenging the above three claims, the Enquiry interpretation highlights Hume’s views on the connection between happiness and virtue, shows that Hume is most plausibly read as a qualitative hedonist, and suggests that the differences between the accounts of justice within the Treatise and the second Enquiry are more significant than has been previously acknowledged.

In Republic book 9, Plato offers a puzzling argument suggesting that subjects can err even in their immediate self-ascriptions of pleasure. In this paper, I offer a detailed analysis and original interpretation of this argument, which I call the Deceptive Pleasure Argument. On the reading I defend here, Plato’s Socrates argues that pleasure is more than a feeling. The raw feel of the hedonic experience – the felt sense or feeling tone of our pleasure (that which enters awareness) – just partially constitutes a pleasure; in addition, it takes an underlying restorative process in which one of our physical or psychological needs is being met. In the absence of such an underlying restorative process, we are dealing with a case of deceptive pleasure or hedonic illusion akin to perceptual illusion. My reading does not just show that Plato’s views are more subtle and cogent than often appreciated, it also elucidates how the Deceptive Pleasure Argument mounts a powerful strike against the challenge posed by Socrates’s interlocutors.

The recent literature on Leibniz’s views on salvation and damnation has focused on whether Leibniz was a lifelong believer in the doctrine of eternal damnation, or whether he came to accept universalism, the doctrine that everyone will be saved. Neglected, however, has been Leibniz’s complex and surprising justification of damnation. In this paper, I examine Leibniz’s attempt to answer the ‘complaint of the damned’: the damned’s complaint that God has treated them unjustly by creating them such that damnation was inevitable. I argue that Leibniz’s ‘psychology of damnation’ is the centerpiece of his response to the complaint of the damned. I further show that the psychology of damnation is not only of theological interest, but also provides an account of the moral psychology of evil in general, and helps solve a puzzle that arises from Leibniz’s naturalized theory of punishment – the puzzle of how vice can be naturally ‘self-punishing.’

Kant on the Obstacles of Reflection: Affects, Passions and Maxims

In the Anthropology , Kant writes that both passions and affects impede reflection. However, he also holds that passions can be paired with reflection, while affects cannot. Stating that passions can both impede reflection and be paired with it seems to imply a contradiction. I seek to solve the problem by arguing that Kant is drawing on two notions of ‘reflection.’ The one kind of reflection consists in the ability to properly assess whether one should act from one’s affect or one’s passion in light of some normative standards. The other kind of reflection consists in the ability to explicitly endorse at least some of the more general maxims that underlie one’s maxim. In view of this distinction, I argue that the former kind is impeded by both passions and affects, while the latter kind is impeded by affects alone.

Getting at the Root of Evil: Kant and Fichte on the Murderer at the Door

In his famous essay, “On a Supposed Right to Lie from Philanthropy,” Kant argues that one is not allowed to lie, not even if a murderer comes to one’s door asking the whereabouts of their innocent victim who has taken refuge in one’s home. Many of Kant’s readers worry that his rigorism concerning the duty of truthfulness leaves us powerless in the face of evil. My aim in this paper is to reconstruct and offer a qualified defense of a Fichtean approach to the duty of truthfulness. I argue that, instead of leaving us powerless in the face of evil, the Fichtean approach gets at the root of evil. This is because Fichte’s prohibition against lying in his System of Ethics goes together with a perfectionist commitment to promote the greatest possible development of rational nature both in ourselves and in all other individuals.

Neutral Monism and the Attributes of God in Spinoza’s Metaphysics

Spinoza’s definition of attributes as “what the intellect perceives of a substance, as constituting its essence” ( Ethics 1D4) has led many scholars to endorse an attribute-neutral reading of his metaphysics. According to this reading, attributes like thought and extension pertain to the way substance is perceived, rather than how it is in itself. Yet Spinoza defines God as “a substance consisting of an infinity of attributes” ( Ethics 1D6). No attribute-neutral interpreter has yet explained how an attribute-neutral substance could be defined by its quantity of attributes. To resolve this problem, I propose a new reading of Spinoza’s definition of attribute, arguing that we should understand Spinoza’s attributes as model-dependent , on analogy with the model-dependent dimensions of Cartesian geometry. I use the idea of model-dependence to explain how Spinoza can maintain that having infinitely many attributes is a feature of an attribute-neutral substance.

The ongoing explorations of post-Avicennian philosophy and Islamic theology (kalam) have tended to focus on thinkers from the Islamic East. In this paper, I will try to show that attention to later North African scholars can help enrich and nuance our sense of the philosophical landscape after Avicenna. I focus on the discussion of the existence/essence distinction by Ibn al-Tilimsānī (d. 1260), an Ashʿarī theologian active in Egypt. His discussion reveals that there were still influential scholars who rejected the mainstream post-Avicennian view that existence is additional or extrinsic to contingent essences.

In this essay I explore Leibniz’s changing views on the relation of substance to the continuum, with special attention to his calling the fundamental units of reality “metaphysical points”. I trace the development of his thought on this question, and on his notions of “physical” and “mathematical” points, from the early 1670s through to the end. I note certain enigmas on the way; namely, his notions of “transcreation” and “indistant” points, his peculiar characterization of contiguity, and the apparent violation of the Law of Continuity in texts of 1676 and 1705. I then argue that considerable light is thrown on these enigmas, and on both his earlier and later views, by manuscripts dating from the 1690s and later that have only recently been published.

One of Wolff’s earliest and most distinctive ambitions was to turn philosophy into a mathematical science by integrating philosophical and mathematical cognition. This paper reconstructs the origins and development of an underinvestigated aspect of Wolff’s mathematization project and argues for its significance to Wolff’s mature system. Since, on his account, all that is finite has a quantity, Wolff thought it was possible to obtain mathematical cognition of the objects of all philosophical disciplines, including metaphysics and ethics. Inspired by John Craig’s application of mathematics to theology, Wolff soon envisaged the use of mathematical tools to reform ontology. He later justified the possibility of measuring non-extended objects by reviving the scholastic doctrine of degrees and intensive magnitudes. I argue that his groundbreaking interest in psychometry stems from this background.

The Roots of Hypertime

Hypertime is a theory that postulates that time has two or more dimensions. Much of the groundwork underlying current theories of hypertime in analytic philosophy is generally attributed to discussions about time travel in the second half of the twentieth century. This paper demonstrates that the historical roots of hypertime extend much further back. Drawing on recently uncovered archival documents, I demonstrate that sophisticated theories of multi-dimensional time were developed by philosophers decades before the interest in time travel took off. These pioneers of hypertime were working on psychical research: the study of psychical phenomena such as telepathy or ghosts, widely popular at the turn of the twentieth century. They developed multi-dimensional time as a tool to resolve various problems with precognition, the purported ability to see the future. I will conclude by indicating the pitfalls of neglecting this important chapter in the history of the philosophy of time.
