1 Source of materials

1,1ʹ-(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid) ligand (H4L) was synthesized according to the previous published paper [5]. Other materials were purchased from Accela ChemBio Inc. and used as received. Zn(NO3)2⋅6H2O (0.0297 g, 0.1 mmol), H4L (0.0207 g, 0.05 mmol), DMF/CH3CH2OH/H2O (8 mL, 6:1:1, v/v/v) were mixed in a 20 mL capped vial, then put the vial in a 120 °C oven for 72 h and cooled to room temperature at a rate of 15 °C/h. Colourless block crystals of the title complex were obtained, yielding 43% (based on the ligand).

2 Experimental details

All the operations were executed via the OLEX2 software. The raw frame was solved and refined by means of SHELXT program with intrinsic phasing and SHELXL program with least squares minimisation, respectively. All H-atoms were placed in their idealized positions with isotropic thermal parameters, other atoms were refined anisotropically.

As a flexible potential ligand bearing both nitrogen and oxygen as coordinating atoms, 1,1ʹ-1,4-(phenylenebis(methylene))-bis(1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid) (H4L), has been used for preparation of metal complexes. In particular, the Cd(II)/Tb(III)/Dy(III)/Mn(II)/Ba(II)-complexes based on H4L have been reported [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], but the common Zn(II)-complex has not been exploited. Hence, the title 2D Zn(II)-complex was synthesized by hydrothermal method.

The asymmetric unit contains half a L4− ligand, half a zinc ion and a protonated dimethylamine. The zinc ion is bonded with four carboxyl O-atoms (O1, O11 − x, 1/2 + y, −1/2 − z, O41 − x, −y, −1 − z, O4+x, 1/2 − y, −1/2 + z) and two pyrazole N-atoms (N1, N11 − x, 1/2 + y, −1/2 − z). Overall, the zinc ion is six-coordinated, exhibiting a slight distorted octahedral geometry. The bond lengths of Zn–O and Zn–N are within the normal range, 2.094(2)–2.147(2) Å, compared to the other Zn(II)-complexes with similar coordination environments [10, 11]. For the L4− ligand the two pyrazole rings are parallel to each other and distributed on different sides of the central benzene ring. The dihedral angle of the pyrazole ring to the benzene ring is 112.8(2)°. The zinc ions and L4− form 2D Zn(II)-ligand layers. These layers are further linked by the dimethylammonium cations through intermolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions (N3—H3A⋯O3, N3—H3B⋯O2x, −y, −1 − z) and finally resulted in a 3D extended network.
