Abstract
C34H36CuN2O4, monoclinic, P21/n (no. 14), a = 15.4951(2) Å, b = 5.62730(10) Å, c = 17.3541(2) Å, β = 90.831(1)°, V = 1513.04(4) Å3, Z = 2, Rgt(F) = 0.0415, wRref(F2) = 0.0986, T = 296 K.
The molecular structure is shown in the figure. Table 1 contains crystallographic data and Table 2 contains the list of the atoms including atomic coordinates and displacement parameters.

Source of material
The mixture of CuCl2 (0.040 g, 0.3 mmol), benzylamine (0.990 mL, 0.9 mmol, diluted to 1:10 in ethanol solvent), α-methylcinnamic acid ((E)-2-methyl-3-phenylacrylic acid; 0.049 g, 0.3 mmol) in ethanol (1.0 mL) was sealed under vacuum in a Pyrex tube and heated to 100 °C for 68 h, then cooled to room temperature at 20 °C/h. The pH before and after the reaction were both 7. Some violet rod-shaped crystals of the title compound were recovered with unidentified green ribbon crystals after vacuum filtration. The product is stable in air.
Experimental details
Hydrogen atoms were placed in calculated positions and refined using riding models. The Uiso value of the methyl group in α-methylcinnamate was set to 1.5Ueq(C) and the Uiso values of other H atoms were set to 1.2Ueq(C, N).
Comment
In coordination chemistry, organic ligands with unsaturated dicarboxylates have been intensively studied because they may give new structures with interesting physical properties [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]. Many cinnamate complexes have been previously studied and have shown a wide variety of topologies. However, little attention has been paid to α-methylcinnamate, a derivative of trans-cinnamate. Only one series of iridium complexes containing α-methylcinnamate has been reported [10]. In this study we report a new copper(II) complex containing α-methylcinnamate and benzylamine.
The crystal structure of the title compound comprises discrete copper(II) complex moieties. One crystallographically unique Cu atom (located on an inversion center) is coordinated by two oxygen atoms from two symmetry related α-methylcinnamate ((E)-2-methyl-3-phenylacrylato) ligands (d(Cu–O) = 1.935(1) Å) in a κ1 O mode (see the Figure). Two nitrogen atoms from two symmetry related benzylamine ligands (d(Co–N) = 1.998(2) Å) in trans-configuration complete the square planar environment of Cu1. In the CuO2N2 square plane, the angles of N–Cu–N and O–Cu–O are 180° because the Cu atom is in the center of inversion symmetry position, and N–Cu–O is very close to the ideal 90° angle (89.63(7)°–90.37(7)°). The bond valence sum (BVS) calculation for Cu gives a value of +2.01 indicating an oxidation state of +2 [11]. The terminal oxygen atom from the α-methylcinnamate is intramolecular-hydrogen bonded to the adjacent nitrogen atom of benzylamine with the distance of d(N1–H1A···O2) = 3.075 Å. Each Cu(α-methylcinnamate)2(benzylamine)2 complex is further stabilized by intermolecular-hydrogen bonding with neighboring molecules through N1–H1B···O2 with the distance of 2.937 Å, which forms chains along the b-axis. The chains interact through van der Waals forces between hydrocarbon groups of the α-methylcinnamate and benzylamine with the distance >3.5 Å.
