Source of materials
A mixture of bis(6-carboxyhexyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium bromide (54.6 mg, 1.0 mmol) and 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene (16.0 mg, 1.0 mmol) was dissolved in water (20.0 mL) in a round-bottomed flask. The solution was heated for 12 h at 90 °C and cooled to room temperature. Red crystals were afforded by slow evaporation of the solution at room temperature for two weeks.
Experimental details
Using Olex2 [1], the structure was solved using Charge Flipping and refined with the ShelXL [3] refinement. All hydrogen atoms were positioned geometrically, with the d(C–H) = 0.97–0.99 Å, Uiso(H) = 1.2 times Ueq(C) and Uiso(H) = 1.5 times Ueq(O).
Comment
1,1′-disubstituted 4,4′-bipyridinium ions, also called viologens (V2+), has been widely used in electrochemistry [5] and materials science [6]. Generally, the applications of viologens is mainly take advantage of the first reversible reduction step involving V2+/V− and accompanying the color changes during the first reduction step due to the different absorption domains of V2+ and V−. In supramolecular chemistry, viologens as the electron acceptor were exploited to construct various dynamic materials through host-stabilized charge-transfer (HSCT) interactions [7], [8], [9]. Here, we report the crystal structure of the supramolecular assembly of bis(6-carboxyhexyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium (the 4,4′-bipyridinium was defined as the electron acceptor moiety) with 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene (defined as the electron donor group). The crystal structure suggested that the 4,4′-bipyridinium moiety adopted a perfect coplanar fashion and was surrounded by four 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene molecules through C–H…π (the bond length is 2.881 Å) and ion-dipole (the bond lengths in the range 3.154–3.217 Å) interactions (see the figure). All the bond lengths and bond angles are within the normal scope [10]. These results indicated the strong charge transfer between the 4,4′-bipyridinium and 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene moieties [7].
