Abstract

Guinea-Bissau is a highly multilingual country. Alongside over twenty African local languages, two main Romance varieties are in use: Portuguese, the official language, and Guinea-Bissau Creole, the main spoken vehicular variety. This chapter first gives an overview of the present-day linguistic situation in Guinea-Bissau before dealing in detail with the respective status and linguistic characteristics of Portuguese and Guinea- Bissau Creole in this West African country.
