Abstract

Gabon is a small country on the African scale, with a strong urban population. French was actively introduced at the end of the nineteenth century, and Gabon is today the country with the highest percentage of French speakers in continental Africa. French has a well-established status as an official language used for administration, education, the media, and also day-to-day communication. With the exception of languages related to traditional religion and ancestor cults, many ethnic languages are endangered due to its strong presence. Some Gabonese languages like Fang, Punu, or Myene are promoted in specific contexts.
