Abstract

The paper presents a socio-cognitive model of discredit in political communication and focuses on aggressive language used on the web by analyzing different types of speech acts like insults and evaluative comments. Based on this model a case study is presented on the aggressiveness of a political leader and of his followers on social media, trying to disentangle the social and linguistic mechanisms implied in this kind of communicative exchange. In particular the case study allows us to explore the role played by the “social media tone” where the political leader’s directness, the use of (sexual) provocation and the absence of dissent contribute to an increase in supporters’/followers’ aggressive language.
