Ein Kapitel aus dem Buch Verbale Aggression

Abstract

Saying No is often problematic for the participants of speech events. In official situations where one has to take a particular stance, for example, in the case of refusal letters for job applications, it is especially problematic and causes the sender some discomfort. This is why the authors of refusal letters often utilize various refusal strategies interweaving refusal acts with other acts whose aim is to soften the refusal itself. The objective of this article is to analyze German refusal letters for job applications in the light of (Im)politeness Theory and to create a typology of techniques and strategies which takes into account the linguistic units participating in formulating refusal reactions and enabling the categorization of speech acts as polite or impolite.
