Pragmatics of Fiction
This chapter is in the book Pragmatics of Fiction

Abstract

Conceptualising fiction as one type of cultural performance with intricate linguistic and multimodal characteristics that have stylistic value, I outline the major points of intersection between stylistics and pragmatics and illustrate classic recent trends of how the pragmatics of style in fiction have been investigated in both disciplines, pragmatics and stylistics. One focus is on the analysis of voices in fiction, the other is on the analysis of both the interplay between fictional and non-fictional discourse and that of different semiotic modes to explain how meaning is made as well as style and (social) styling are reflected and construed in various contexts of production and reception.
