Abstract

This chapter aims to document summarily the historical evolution of different Galician media over the last two centuries, identifying the main social actors and initiatives, and their linguistic and cultural peculiarities. Further to characterizing the printed media that employed Galician, special reference will be made to the appearance and development of audio-visual and cinematographic production supported by the changes that took place with the transition to democracy in Spain. The progressive technologisation of information and communication has led to an authentic media revolution as regards the use of Galician in the past forty years. The culmination of this process takes place with the presence of the Internet in everyday life, giving rise to a new communication space which is much more direct and interactive, encompassing new habits and challenges. In tandem with the incorporation of Galician society into modern consumer culture, advertising forms an essential part of the Galician linguistic ecosystem today. As a communication technique that helps to finance the media, we will deal briefly with its particular development in the last decades.
