Cancers are a set of pathologies originated by cells that have the ability to divide and multiply uncontrollably, associated with the capacity to invade and colonize adjacent tissues. Chemotherapy is one of the main approaches of treatment for cancer patients. Despite of the numerous antineoplastic drugs available, cancer cannot be cured; particularly at the late stages deprived of any side effect. Arylchromenes and arylchromans are a group of small molecules, of natural or synthetic origin, of great interest as prototypes for the drug development, especially against cancer. In this chapter, we will present the antineoplastic activity studies of the most promising examples of these arylchromenes and arylchroman derivatives.

Lithium ion batteries will play a significant role in the future of energy generation. The need for polymer electrolytes will be critical as such batteries are developed and implemented. The use of inorganic solid electrolytes likewise will be critical in the development of this emerging technology.

The kinetic analysis of an anaerobic fluidized bed bioreactor treating distillery effluent was carried out. Natural zeolite was used as biomass carrier at various organic loading rates and hydraulic retention times (HRT). The degradation followed first order kinetics and fitted Michaelis–Menten kinetic model for substrate utilization. The kinetic analysis showed that 9% of the TOC was nonbiodegradable which corresponds to about 14% COD. The non-biodegradable component was responsible for the dark-brown color of the distillery effluent and therefore there was a need for employing a post-treatment technology for their removal. Biomass yield was found to be 0.4658 g/g while endogenic microorganisms decay coefficient was 0.0293, which suggested that there was a need to install a sludge handling unit prior to post-treatment. The maximum micro-organisms’ growth rate was found to be 0.136 d −1 while the specific growth rate of the micro-organisms reduced with an increase in HRT at constant feed concentration. The specific substrate utilization rate was found to increase linearly with an increase in the ration of food to micro-organisms and the mean cell residence time was found to be at least 2.5 times the HRT due to application of zeolite as microbial support in the reactor.

Use of biochemical markers for diabetes prevention in the new decade. There is established evidence that type 2 diabetes mellitus is preceded by a phase, during which there is a cluster of conditions including raised triglycerides and lowered high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, raised fasting glucose, high blood pressure and central obesity. This cluster of risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus, constitutes the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, there is need to screen for this syndrome among the population for the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus which is a global public health problem. Despite the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Mauritius, research work on MetS is scarce. This study was thus undertaken with the primary objective to determine the prevalence of MetS among the employees of a public educational institution in Mauritius. A cross-sectional study which involved randomly identified employees was conducted. The participants were requested to fill in a survey questionnaire, undergo biometric measurements (waist circumference and blood pressure) and venous blood sample collection in a fasting condition. The blood tests included the determination of glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol levels. The 2009 International Diabetes Federation criteria were used for the diagnosis of MetS. The presence of any 3 of 5 risk factors, raised triglycerides, raised glucose, lowered high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high blood pressure and central obesity constitutes a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Department of Medicine Research Ethics Committee of the University of Mauritius. The prevalence of MetS was found to be 20.1% (40 participants), in the overall population, 31.4% in men (22 out of 70) and 13.95% in women (18 out of 129). The determination of any association by means of the Chi square tests showed there was a significant association between gender and MetS (p < 0.01). Educational level was also associated with the MetS (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis confirmed t\he significant association between MetS with gender (p < 0.01) where male gender was more associated with MetS than female. This study with the determination of the prevalence of the MetS among employees constituted the first step in the implementation of a structured workplace health intervention programme in Mauritius. We highlight the importance of workplace interventions with the involvement of a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals for the primary prevention of diabetes, through the screening for the MetS among employees.

Antibreast cancer activities of 131 phytochemicals from Annona muricata (Soursop) were investigated against human placental aromatase (PDB ID: 3S7S), a prominent target receptor in breast cancer therapy using computer aided-drug design approach. An antibreast cancer drug (tamoxifen) was used for comparison. The result of this work flourishes caffeoquinic acid (−8.4 kcal/mol), roseoside (−8.3 kcal/mol), chlorogenic acid (−8.2 kcal/mol), feruloylglycoside (−8.1 kcal/mol), citroside A (−8.0 kcal/mol), and coreximine (−7.8 kcal/mol), as probable inhibitors of human placental aromatase. This is due to their excellent binding affinities (Δ G ), coupled with outstanding druglike, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity profiles, bioavailability and oral-bioavailability properties, and the interactions of important residues with the active pocket of human placental aromatase. All the results obtained were similar to that of the standards tamoxifen (−8.0 kcal/mol) but could be better when optimized. Thus, lead optimization, molecular dynamics, and in vivo investigations are thereby recommended on the identified potent compounds in the quest of developing new therapeutic agents against breast cancer.

In the present paper the synthesis and structural characterization of alkaline-earth metal(II) complexes of the polyether ionophorous antibiotic salinomycinic acid (SalH.H 2 O) are discussed. The complexes [M(Sal) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] (M = Mg 2+ , 1 ; Ca 2+ , 2 ; Sr 2+ , 3 ; Ba 2+ , 4 ) were obtained reacting salinomycinic acid and Et 4 NOH with the corresponding metal(II) salts at metal-to-ligand-to-base molar ratio of 1:1:1. The spectral properties of 1–4 were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental analysis data. The crystallinity degree and morphology of complex 2 were studied by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The biometal(II) salinomycinate complexes 1 and 2 possess an enhanced antimicrobial activity compared to the parent antibiotic against Gram-positive bacteria. The comparison between the effectiveness of the complexes, reported here, and the already known isostructural coordination species of salinomycin and monensin (MonH.H 2 O), revealed that magnesium(II) and calcium(II) monensinates appear to be promising antibacterial agents against Bacillus subtilis , Bacillus cereus and Micrococcus luteus .

Biofuel is a sustainable energy source that may use to replace fossil-based carbon dioxide and mitigate the adverse effects of exhaust emissions. Nowadays, we need to replace petroleum fuels with alternatives from environmentally sustainable sources of increasing importance. Biofuels derived from biomass have gained considerable attention, and thus most of the traditional methods that harm the environment and humans have retreated. Developing an active and stable heterogeneous catalyst is a step of utmost importance in the renewable liquid fuel technology. Thus, there is a great interest in developing methods for producing liquid fuels from non-edible sources. It may also be from dry plant tissues such as agricultural waste. Lignocellulosic biomass can be a sustainable source for producing renewable fuels and chemicals, as well as the replacement of petroleum products. Hence, the researchers aspired to synthesize new catalysts using a cheap technology developed to hydrolyze cellulose and then produce bioethanol without needing expensive enzymes, which may ultimately lead to a lower fuel price. In this paper, we will focus on the recent technologies used to produce sustainable biofuels through inexpensive incentives and innocuous to the environment.

Archidendron jiringa (Jack) I.C. Nielsen plant, locally known as jengkol, is a species belongs to Archidendron genus of the Fabaceae family. This plant is a potential source of biologically active secondary metabolites, which are useful for various purposes, such as to destroy bacteria and fungi, to treat cancer, and as antioxidant agent. In this study, extract of A. jiringa stem bark was fractionated and subsequently tested for antibacterial, cytotoxic and antioxidant activity. Extraction was carried out using maceration and fractionation of the extract was conducted using both vacuum liquid and column chromatography techniques to obtain three fractions. The biological activity of the bulk extract and fractions were then evaluated using disc diffusion method, revealing that the sample with the highest activity against Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli is the ethyl acetate extract, while no inhibitory effect on both bacteria was observed for some ethyl acetate fractions tested. The screening tests indicate that the bulk extract and all fractions exhibit promising toxicity, with the LC 50 values in the range of 227–837 ppm. In addition, good antioxidant activities, with the IC 50 values in the range of 0.7–7.2 ppm, are displayed by bulk extract and the fractions.

The government of South Africa through the department of water and sanitation has installed numerous activated sludge systems in most of the municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) to ensure adequate sanitation. However, secondary sludge generation and handling is a major challenge of the AS process. This work reviews the sludge production potential in selected regions in South Africa including Midvaal, Emfuleni and Lesedi municipalities. Further, the sludge handling cost and potential methods of sludge minimization are discussed. This study found that the selected MWWTPs discharge effluent volume of between 3 and 65 ML/day with average COD of about 350 mg/L leading to sludge production of between 5 and 23 tons/day with an estimated handling cost of €57,000 to €320,000 per year. Some of the technologies reviewed for sludge minimization to cut down plant operation cost include chemical oxidation using ozone and potassium ferrate (K 2 FeO 4 ), application of oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process, anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (AAO) combined with K 2 FeO 4 oxidation side stream reactor (SSR), SANI ® technology and use of anaerobic side stream reactor (ASSR) in the conventional activated sludge (AS) line.

Of late, regio-selective tandem reactions are given much attention due to the formation of several multiple bonds in a single synthetic operation, avoids altering the reaction conditions, isolation of the intermediates during the reaction, reduces the production of toxic waste to the environment and can produce highly complex organic molecules with desired selectivity. Though, it requires the well-built knowledge for optimization of the process, it permits to make the complex organic molecules with least number of steps, and it has eventually made great interest and inspiration to the upcoming organic chemists. Presentation of current book chapter presents the Cu-Catalysed tandem reactions for building poly hetero atom heterocyclic compounds via green approach.

Magnetite as an adsorbent is efficient since iron oxides have high affinities for heavy metal pollutants and are environmentally friendly. Manganese oxides provide catalytic properties which are desirable during the remediation of multi valent pollutants. Magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) and manganese doped magnetite (Mn x Fe (3-x) O 4 ) nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized to determine the manganese doping effects on magnetite’s crystal and surface properties. Fe 3 O 4 and Mn x Fe (3-x) O 4 showed similarities in crystal morphology indicating that manganese doping did not alter the nature of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Manganese doping improved magnetite’s thermal properties as well as its surface area providing improved adsorption characteristics. The as-synthesized particles were applied in the optimization of hexavalent chromium adsorption. Adsorption proceeded under similar conditions for both adsorbents indicating their structural similarities. Higher efficiencies were observed on the doped adsorbent due to increased surface area and the presence of additional functional groups. Solution pH significantly affected the adsorption process aiding in the reduction of Cr(VI) ions to the less toxic Cr(III) species. The adsorption distribution coefficient K D indicated that manganese doping significantly improved magnetite’s affinity for hexavalent chromium. Adsorption and reduction were determined to responsible for pollutant reduction in solution at optimal conditions of pH 2, 5 g/L and 100 mg/L for adsorbent mass and solution concentration.

The Fabaceae is recognized as the third largest and one of the most influential families among the flowering plants. Furthermore, its name is linked to “Legumes”, which represent a vast group of angiosperms in the continents utilized as crops, forages, and green manures. It is recognized for diverse constituents, covering both primary metabolites include lectins, chitinases, various proteases, and α -amylase inhibitors, as well as secondary metabolites include flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins, and phenolics. Fabaceae flavonoid plays an important role in the legumes’ adaptability to biological surroundings as defensive agents (phytoalexins) and as chemical signals in a symbiotic relationship with a bacterial species known as rhizobia. Considering their important role in plant defense and benefits to human healthiness, a number of studies on the Fabaceae plant have been performed, namely isolation and screening of the purified compounds and their biological activity. This study outlines specified issues on the chemical structure, biosynthesis, biological activities, and medicinal uses of Fabaceae compounds.

Squarylium dyes were synthesized and characterized by different spectrometric techniques using FT-IR, UV-visible and GC–MS, the dyes gave molar extinction coefficient values greater than 5.2812 × 105 L mol −1 cm −1 . Their fastness properties in respect to wash, light, perspiration and hot pressing on nylon 6, and silk fabrics were analyzed, effects of time, temperature, carrier concentration and pH was also investigated and reported. The dyed fabrics showed good to very good wash, light fastness, and perspiration good to very good hot pressing on nylon 6 and good to very good on silk fabric, respectively. The dye-bath exhaustion was found to be between 76 and 92% on nylon 6 and 57 and 85% on silk, respectively. The percentage exhaustion on nylon 6 was found to be very good to excellent but on silk it was found to be good to very good. These studies showed that squarylium dyes can be applied to nylon 6 and silk fabrics, but better performance was found on nylon 6 than silk fabric.

At the Center of Molecular Immunology (Havana, Cuba), the fusion protein SARS-CoV-2 S protein (RBD)-hFc was synthesized linking the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the crystallizable fragment of a human immunoglobulin. This fusion protein was used in the construction of a diagnostic device for COVID-19 called UMELISA SARS-CoV-2-IgG. Given the relevance of this protein, the characterization of three batches (A1, A2 and A3) was carried out. The molecular weight of the protein was determined to be 120 kDa, using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Its isoelectric point was estimated between 8.3 and 9 by isoelectric focusing. The molecular integrity was evaluated by size exclusion liquid chromatography and SDS-PAGE after one year of the production of the protein; the presence of aggregates and fragments was detected. Batches A1 and A2 have a purity percentage higher than 95% and they can be used for the construction of new diagnostic devices.

The proper documentation of ethnopharmacological application of widely used indigenous plants and their phytochemical analysis has positively impacted the drug discovery pipeline. Medicinal plants with potential commercial value and prospects for clinical application need to be properly identified and authenticated to avoid confusion, adulteration and substitution. Oldenlandia affinis (OA) has continued to attract scientific attention following the discovery of extremely stable cyclotides (circular peptides) that are not expressed in many investigated members of the contentious genus, Oldenlandia (synonym – Hedyotis ); yet there is a lack of an elaborate review covering some broader aspects of its traditional uses, ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry of the species. More importantly, the age long but lingering confusion and taxonomic inconsistencies common to the Oldenlandia–Hedyotis debate could foster species mismatching, increase cases of misidentification, promote adulteration of OA and thereby limit its proper clinical application. Here, we aim to reveal the extent of indigenous use of and research on OA from 1960 till date, unveil knowledge gaps, document hitherto unknown traditional applications, ethnopharmacological uses, pharmacological properties, and reported phytochemical profile. In addition, to encourage proper selection and utilization of genuine crude drug, the chemotaxonomically important phytoconstituents of OA have been presented and the modern approach of chemophenetic study of OA proposed to resolve the lack of consensus in the taxonomy of OA as well as the morphologically and anatomically close members of the taxon. The abundant cyclotide expression in OA represents a new chemotaxonomic marker for its unambiguous identification, utilization and reproducibility of research findings on the species.

This research work assessed the extraction, isolation and characterization of secondary metabolites in the leaves of Morinda lucida. The leaves of the plant were collected from Oshiegbe in Ebonyi state. They were air-dried and pulverized for extraction. The extraction was done using petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol through sequential extraction method at room temperature. The extracts were concentrated and subjected to phytochemical analysis. The concentrated fraction was subjected to thin layer chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography to obtain the pure compounds. The isolated compounds were characterized using ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy (UV), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) for their structural elucidation. The result of the work showed that the ethanol extract recorded the highest percentage yield of 5.36 while the petroleum ether extract recorded the least percentage yield of 0.61. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, flavonoids, steroids and glycosides in the leaves of the plants. The ethanol extract yielded four pure isolates (compounds) of R f values: 0.93, 0.80, 0.86 and 0.72. The compounds were characterized as N -ethyl- N -nitroso-ethylmethanoate ( 1 ) bicyclo-[3,1,1]-2,6,6-trimethyl heptane-2,3-diol ( 2 ) dibutylphthalate ( 3 ) and 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid-butyl-2-methylpropyl ester ( 4 ) The spectral results and GC-MS fragmentation pattern agreed with the structures of the isolated compounds.

The immunomodulatory property of some parasitic helminths is well documented. The glycoprotein ES-62 from the nematode, acanthocheilonema viteae has been found to possess immunomodulatory properties. Two small molecule analogues (SMA’s) of ES-62 (S3 and S5) were found to mimic its immunomodulatory properties in vivo and were active in animal models of allergic, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. In this work, new efforts were made to further optimise the activities of compound S3 by making small but directed structural changes. A variety of analogues based on the S3 prototype were simulated by making variations at one position and then screened in silico . The best compounds were selected based on predicted physiochemical properties and medicinal chemistry indices and synthesised. Structural elucidation was done via HNMR, LCMS, FTIR and HRESIMS. The predicted properties were evaluated by HPLC method. A total of 11 novel molecules were synthesised and characterised. Significant correlation was obtained between the predicted physicochemical properties and their HPLC retention times (RT) for eight of our novel compounds. This suggests that these compounds may behave in a physiological environment as closely as computationally predicted. This entails, lesser host toxicity while maintaining good or better activities compared to the earlier prototype. They hence provide a good opportunity for development of drugs for immune conditions such as asthma, inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

During the past several decades, metal-based catalysis is one of the major and direct approaches for the synthesis of organic molecules. Nowadays, materials containing predominantly carbon element which are termed as carbocatalysts, become the most promising area of research to replace transition metal catalysts. In this context of carbocatalysis, the use of graphene oxide (GO) and GO-based materials are under spotlight due to their sustainability, environmental benignity and large scale-availability. The presence of oxygen containing functional groups in GO makes it benign oxidant and slightly acidic catalyst. This chapter provides a broad discussion on graphene oxide (GO) as well as its preparation, properties and vast area of application. The catalytic activity of GO has been explored in different organic transformations and it has been recognized as an oxidation catalyst for various organic reactions.

Acetone O-((2,5-dichlorophenyl)sulfonyl) oxime was prepared from 2,5-dichlorophenylsulfonyl chloride and acetone oxime using triethylamine. The compound was characterized using 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectra. Molecular docking was performed with the compound and cholinesterase enzymes. The average affinity of the compound with the acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase was calculated at −7.46 ± 0.14 and −6.70 ± 0.00 kcal/mol, respectively. The density functional theory method was also used to complement the experimental study. The findings of this work might be useful towards the applications of the compound studied.

Membrane separation systems have been used in process industry since decades; however, their designs are based mainly on experienced-based and use of trial-and-error approach, especially in case of membrane selection. This chapter reviews recent advancements in the design of membrane systems used either for separation or creation of mixtures from the perspective of industry 4.0 and data management. Additionally, computer-aided design tools have been reviewed with aim of possible use in the design of membrane separation systems.

Stereoselective preparation of diverse trans and cis β-lactams following different experimental conditions are executed. A variety of circumstances are critically analyzed. It has been found that the stereochemistry of the products depends on a number of parameters including the conditions of the procedures, composition of the Schiff bases and acid chlorides or equivalents, method of addition of the reactants, temperature of the process and nature of the media. Using some of the compounds and methods as described herein, a number of useful chemical transformations for the preparation of heterocycles are achieved. These methods include indium-catalyzed glycosylation of amino β-lactams, preparation of pyrrole-substituted β-lactams, cycloaddition with sterically congested Schiff bases towards β-lactams, Michael reaction for the preparation of polycyclic oxazepenes and synthesis of two chiral isomers of the thienamycin side chain. Most of the products are obtained stereospecifically and in optically active forms. Many reactions described here are catalytic and therefore, these are environmentally friendly.

Alkaloids have been known overtime to have medicinal uses. Exploring alkaloid derived hydrazones and their complexes as potential therapeutic agents with a view to improving the medicinal uses of alkaloids are imperative. 1,8-dichloroacridone hydrazone hydrochloride, 1-chloro pilocarpine nitrate-3-chlorophenyl hydrazone and 1-phenethyl-4-piperidone formyl hydrazone ligands were synthesized via Wolff–Kishner condensation reaction. Five metal (II) complexes of cobalt, nickel and manganese were prepared by stirring the ligands with the respective metal salts. The ligands and complexes were characterized using elemental analyses, molar conductivity, FTIR, 1 H and 13 C nmr, UV–Vis spectra, melting point and solubility. Antimicrobial activities of the ligands and their complexes were tested against four bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus , Streptococcus faecalis Escherichia coli , Salmonella paratyphimurium ) and a fungus ( Candida albican ). The molar conductance values indicate that they are 1:1 and 1:2 type electrolytes while the elemental analyses of the complexes reveals a 1:1 metal to ligand stoichiometry. The relevant IR bands suggest coordination is through the C=N, C=O, N=C–O and C–N groups. Both 1 H and 13 C nmr corroborated the elemental analysis while the UV–Vis reveals intra-ligand charge transfer while the complexes exhibited the expected metal transitions bands. A proposed octahedral geometry is supported by spectral data. Only 1, 8-dichloroacridonehydrazone hydrochloride ligand was found to be active against all the organisms. Cobalt and nickel complexes of 1,8-dichloroacridonehydrazone hydrochloride were active against S . paratyphimurium and S . aureus, respectively, while cobalt complex of 1-chloropilocarpinenitrate-3-chlorophenylhydrazone was active against S. faecalis and S. paratyphimurium . The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were also recorded.

The spontaneity concept plays crucial roles in the description of chemical reactions and entails a variety of implications, including the determination of the difference between galvanic and electrolytic cells. Students experience challenges with handling the concept and its implications within chemistry contexts. Everyday-life examples do not provide immediate evidence of chemistry-related spontaneity, and some features may be misinterpreted. The Δ G  < 0 spontaneity criterion does not have an everyday-life correspondence and mostly remains abstract. Tendencies to equate exothermic or fast with spontaneous appear frequently. Using the spontaneity or non-spontaneity concepts in the interpretation of observed simple electrochemical phenomena may pose difficulties. The challenges are greatly enhanced by two diffuse contextual features: tendency to rote learning and inadequate language-mastery, with the latter being a major cause of the former and generally hindering conceptual understanding. The paper highlights the main difficulties diagnosed within an action research approach, documenting them with a sufficiently ample selection of illustrative examples. The ways in which diagnoses are utilised as guidelines for in-class interventions aimed at addressing identified challenges are delineated and discussed. The integration of chemistry-concepts analysis and language-analysis is viewed as the most powerful instrument to address identified difficulties in real time.

A variety of procedures for the carbon–nitrogen, carbon–oxygen, carbon–sulfur and carbon–selenium bond formation using copper nanoparticles in greener conditions have been highlighted. The synthesis of several heterocyclic compounds of biological importance has also been reported using these protocols.

In this article, we discuss about the influence of tellurium in carbohydrate synthesis. Mainly the chapter focuses on the importance of the tellurium during the synthesis of glycosides and during the oxidation of glucose.

Tetraflavaspidic acid BBBB is a tetrameric acylphloroglucinol of natural origin isolated from Dryopteris aitoniana . Its molecule consists of four acylphloroglucinol units linked by methylene bridges and having the same R = propyl in their R−C=O groups. In one of the terminal monomers, one of the OHs ortho to R−C=O is replaced by a keto O. The paper reports the results of a conformational study performed at the HF/6-31G(d,p) and DFT/B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) levels; two options are utilised for the latter, without and with the inclusion of the Grimme’s dispersion correction. Given the importance of intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs) for the stabilisation of acylphloroglucinol conformers, only conformers containing the maximum IHBs’ number were calculated. The IHBs comprise an IHB between the sp 2 O of R−C=O and a neighbouring OH in each monomeric unit and two inter-monomer IHBs between each pair of units. The single C−C bonds of the methylene bridges enable a variety of mutual orientations of the monomeric units, giving rise to a variety of conformations and IHB patterns. The results indicate greater stability for conformers in which individual monomers take lower energy conformations, and significant influence of the dispersion correction on the estimation of the energetics and of other molecular properties. The inclusion of the dispersion correction also strongly limits the number of low energy conformers. The influence of dispersion effects is consistent with the presence of four aromatic rings.

Hibiscus cannabinus is used in traditional medicine for treatment of cancer, bacterial infections, diabetics and other diseases. The study was carried out to investigate the phytochemical and antioxidant properties of the oil extracted from Hibiscus cannabinus . The physicochemical parameters of the seed powder were determined using standard procedures. The oil was extracted using Soxhlet extractor and the phytochemical composition was analysed using qualitative tests and GC-MS. The organoleptic characters of the oil were evaluated using standard protocols. Oral acute toxicity in Wistar rats was assayed using the method outlined by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD 425). Qualitative and quantitative antioxidant activity were determined using DPPH free radical assay. The result of the physicochemical evaluation revealed moisture content (8.0%), total ash (4.0%), acid insoluble ash (5.0%), alcohol extractive value (5.5%) and water extractive value (4.5%). The percentage yield of the oil was 13.2%. The organoleptic evaluation of the oil revealed characteristic taste, yellowish colour, characteristic smell and smooth texture. The oil had specific gravity of 0.94 and was found to be soluble/miscible in some organic solvents. The preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of steroids/triterpenoids. The GC-MS revealed the presence of some fatty acids and their esters. The acid value (65.64 mgKOH/g of oil), saponification value (159.32 mgKOH/g of oil), ester value (93.68 mgKOH/g of oil) and iodine value (11.40 gI 2 /100 g of oil) were obtained. The oral acute toxicity showed that the oil was not toxic up to a dose of 5000 mg/kg per body weight. The oil demonstrated free radical scavenging activity with highest percentage inhibition of 85.30% at 0.441 μg/mL. The results of the research showed that Hibiscus cannabinus oil contain antioxidant compounds and the oil is not toxic when tested in rats. Therefore, the oil can be used in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Green-bond forming reactions in organic chemistry are very much essential for the sustainability and it is a continuous evolutionary process. Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the catalysts can offer a green-bond forming chemistry. The present chapter is designed to explain PANI mediated reactions leading to the synthesis of heterocycles. PANI and PANI-doped catalyst preparation methods and together with characterization of PANI catalyst using modern analytical tools is explained. Several heterocycles were prepared using PANI or doped-PANI catalyst in a one pot reaction conditions or sometimes multicomponent reaction conditions. Ease of PANI preparation, simple reaction conditions, PANI recovery and reusability and quick-way of product isolation or workup procedure are the highlights of this chapter.

This study was conducted to evaluate the levels of heavy metal concentrations in sediments and also involves a comparison of two different digestion protocols. The first digestion procedure was done with a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid while the second digestion method was done using the United States Environmental Protection Agency method 3052 which comprises nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen peroxide. The sediment samples were analyzed for cadmium, copper, iron, lead, zinc, chromium, manganese, nickel (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn Cr, Mn, and Ni) with the aid of atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Concentrations of metals ranged 0–7.0 mg/kg for Cr, 0.5–20.0 mg/kg for Cd, 10.8–112.0 mg/kg for Fe, 0.10–7.20 mg/kg for Pb, 45.69–184.96 mg/kg for Cu, 1.0–73.75 mg/kg for Zn, 1.5–19.7 mg/kg for Mn and nd −3.0 mg/kg for Ni. The order of concentrations of the metals in the samples are Cu > Fe > Zn > Cd > Mn > Pb > Cr > Ni. The second digestion method yielded higher levels of metal concentration. Comparison with theWorld Health Organization (W.H.O) standards for marine sediments showed that the average concentrations of heavy metals were within the permissible limits. Close monitoring and more publicity are further needed to discourage further pollution of the area.

Luminescent quantum dots (QDs) represent a new form of carbon nanomaterials which have gained widespread attention in recent years, especially in the area of chemical sensing, bioimaging, nanomedicine, solar cells, light-emitting diode (LED), and electrocatalysis. Their extremely small size renders some unusual properties such as quantum confinement effects, good surface binding properties, high surface‐to‐volume ratios, broad and intense absorption spectra in the visible region, optical and electronic properties different from those of bulk materials. Apart from, during the past few years, QDs offer new and versatile ways to serve as photocatalysts in organic synthesis. Quantum dots (QD) have band gaps that could be nicely controlled by a number of factors in a complicated way, mentioned in the article. Processing, structure, properties and applications are also reviewed for semiconducting quantum dots. Overall, this review aims to summarize the recent innovative applications of QD or its modified nanohybrid as efficient, robust, photoassisted redox catalysts in C–C and C-heteroatom bond forming reactions. The recent structural modifications of QD or its core structure in the development of new synthetic methodologies are also highlighted. Following a primer on the structure, properties, and bio-functionalization of QDs, herein selected examples of QD as a recoverable sustainable nanocatalyst in various green media are embodied for future reference.

During recent years, magnetic separation has proven to be a highly indispensable and sustainable tool for facile separation of catalysts from the reaction medium with the aid of only an external magnetic force that precludes the requirement of energy intensive, solvent based centrifugation or filtration techniques. Extensive research in the area of catalysis has clearly divulged that while designing any catalyst, the foremost features that need to be paid due attention to include high activity, ready recoverability and good reusability. Fortunately, the magnetic nanocatalysts involving a superparamagnetic core material that could comprise of iron oxides such as magnetite, maghemite or hematite or mixed ferrites (CoFe 2 O 4 , CuFe 2 O 4 ) have offered bright prospects of designing the ideal catalysts by proving their efficacy as strong support material that could be further engineered with various tools of nanotechnology and efficiently catalyze various C–heterobond formation reactions. This chapter provides succinct overview of all the approaches utilized for fabricating different types of magnetic nanoparticles and strategies adopted for imparting them durability. The prime forte however remains to exclusively showcase the applications of the various types of magnetic nanocatalysts in C–O, C–N, C–S and miscellaneous (C–Se, C–Te) bond formation reactions which are anticipated to benefit the synthetic community on a broad spectrum by helping them rationalize and analyze the key features that need to be taken into account, while developing these magical nanostructured catalytic systems for boosting the green bond formation reactions/transformations.

Biofilms are consortia of microbes attached to surfaces that could be biotic or abiotic in nature. The bacterial cells are enclosed within a microbial synthesized extrapolymeric substances (EPS). The presence of a thick EPS matrix around the cells, protects it from antimicrobials. As the biofilms are difficult to be eradicated in the tissues and implants, the infections due to biofilms are chronic, persistent as well as recurrent in nature. Biofilm formation in multidrug resistant pathogens is a major public health concern. In this review, we have discussed traditional drug discovery approaches and high throughput screening assays involved in the discovery of small molecules for their application as biofilm inhibitory agents. The small molecules target different phases of biofilm growth in pathogenic bacteria. Here, we have focused on three specific application of small molecules, as anti-adhesion agents that prevent adherence and attachment of cells to surfaces; signal inhibitors that disrupt communication between cells resulting in hampered biofilm growth and development; and finally as agents that induce release of cells from mature biofilms. Some of the biofilm inhibitors have also potentiated the antibiotic efficacy leading to complete eradication of biofilms. It is highly pertinent now to focus on developing these as therapeutics and anti-biofilm agents for coating medical implants and devices in clinical settings.

Tellurium (Te) is widely used in industry because of its unique physicochemical properties. In the general population, foodstuff like meat, dairy products, and cereals is the major source of tellurium exposure. In the occupational environment, inhalational exposure predominates. Due to its exceptional properties as a metalloid, Te is broadly used in the industry. For example, Te is used as an alloy for solar panels, phase change optical magnetic disks, and Peltier devices. Recently, alloys of Te with cadmium, zinc, and other metals are used for nanomaterials, such as quantum dots. Thus, it is suggested that there is an existence of risk of exposure to Te in everyday life. Commercial Te is mostly obtained from slimes of electrolytic copper refineries. Te concentration in the slimes can extend up to 10% or more. Slight levels of its organic compounds may also be absorbed via skin. Not much information is available to prove Te as carcinogenic but its toxicity is well established. The present paper will review the toxicity of Te and its compounds.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester that has advantages over other biopolymers, making it an extensively researched polymer. PCL is a hydrophobic, slow-degrading, synthetic polymer making it particularly interesting for the preparation of long-term implantable devices and a variety of drug delivery systems. Recently, PCL has been used for additional applications including food packaging and tissue engineering. In this chapter, the processing methods and characterization of PCL will be discussed. The chapter will summarize the synthesis of poly( α -hydroxy acid) and the ring-opening polymerization of PCL. Discussion on the biodegradability of PCL will be reviewed. The biomedical applications of PCL, such as, drug-delivery systems, medical devices, and tissue engineering will be also summarized. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a characterization section outlining recent studies focusing on PCL based composites and films.

Animal protein is the most demanded and expensive source of nutritive protein, globally. Taking into account various types of poultry, the broiler (meat-type poultry) is widely accepted by various religious societies and relatively cheap amongst others animal protein sources. In particular, the chicken and turkey product is perceived to be healthier and of better quality due to a low content of fat, cholesterol and sodium compared to red meat. In order to maintain an unabated development and competitiveness of poultry industry, the priority is to focus on quality and safety of meat, during whole production and processing route. Consumers awareness of what should be considered a high quality product is constantly increasing, especially in the light of European and worldwide strategies to meet the common societal and environmental challenges, i.e. addressing the Zero Hunger goals, Green Deal and One Health concept. In this chapter, a common area of interest for a dialogue of poultry scientists and industrial practitioners is drawn from the background given on the consumer (demands and health)-centered issues.
