Abstract
This chapter examines the phenomenon of demonic illusion and ‘false devils’ in the late 16th century. It shows how this phenomenon was systematised in theoretic tracts and pictured in the media. To this end, the chapter analyses a treatise by Johann von Münster, a leaflet, and the so-called Teufelbücher, shedding light on their specific strategies of visual and textual representation. In doing so, the study aims to identify the role that ‘false devils’ played in the context of the strong belief in the devil at the end of the 16th century.

Abstract
This chapter examines the phenomenon of demonic illusion and ‘false devils’ in the late 16th century. It shows how this phenomenon was systematised in theoretic tracts and pictured in the media.
