Abstract
Commentary on Jürgen Mittelstraß’ ‘Historical notes on the concept of nature and world view’. The paper critically deals with two topics of Mittelstraß’ paper. First, I claim that Mittelstraß’ constructive motive that is developed in three steps of increasing radicality is in need of very heterogeneous supportive arguments. In the first step, a fully naturalistic concept of nature is criticized because of the effects of human physical interaction with nature. In the second step, nature as the subject of the natural sciences is seen, due to their experimental procedures, as a technical construct. In the third step, nature is seen as culturally constructed, due to our necessarily conceptual access to it. The heterogeneous arguments necessary to support these three steps are insufficiently developed in the paper. Second I claim that in his defense of the third step, Mittelstraß seriously underestimates the close vicinity of his constructivism with Thomas Kuhn’s philosophy of science due to a misconstrual of the latter.
