Abstract
Historical remarks on the concept of nature and world view. With respect to the functions and capacities of a non-archival history of science, i. e. a philosophical history, views of the world, including nature, are discussed that are the results of scientific work as well as of a systematic reflection on that work and on nature. A distinction is made between different world concepts - an Aristotle world, an hermetic world, a Newton world, an Einstein world and a Leonardo world. They all are examples of worlds of science, and in the final analysis, these examples reveal not only that science makes its own worlds but that there is also a certain relativity of scientific worlds. This analysis also leads to different concepts of nature. In a sense, in a Leonardo world nature becomes an artifact. At the same time an idealistic shadow is cast on it: the (scientific and philosophical) mind recognises itself in nature.
