Abstract
The problem of ‘compensation’ - critical interventions in the work of Ruth and Dieter Grohs. The article examines Ruth and Dieter Groh’s criticism of the idea of compensation in the modern world, as it was prominently advocated by Odo Marquard. It shows how the Grohs rejected the concept not only because of its conservative implications, but also because of its problematic reference to Joachim Ritter. In his seminal essay, Ritter had read Petrarch’s famous letter about the ascent of Mont Ventoux as the beginning of modern aesthetics of nature and thereby also as a direct expression of a bourgeois world. Against Ritter’s functionalist reading, the Grohs provide an eminently historical interpretation of the letter. As will be shown in conclusion, this critique of the historical and theoretical conditions of compensation theory for Ruth and Dieter Groh also leads to an ethical demand for damage correction against the ecological consequences of modernity.
