Places, manners, and the areal phonology of Europe
-
Thomas Stolz
Abstract
In this study, the validity of several parameters relating to places and manners of articulation is assessed in connection with the distribution of phonological properties across the languages of Europe. It is shown that the results reflect patterns which are interesting both for areal typology and phonological typology. Language contact is assumed to be at least partly responsible for similarities between genetically unrelated neighbouring languages. It is argued that these and similar parameters should be tested on a grand scale in the format of phonological atlases dedicated to individual macro-areas.
