Abstract

The paper explores the morphosyntax of place names (PNs) and common nouns (CNs) in Goal and Source constructions in pidgins and creoles. Based on 64 sample languages with different lexifiers located in four different macroareas, the coding strategies for the two types of Ground phrases are compared and assessed in both qualitative and quantitative terms. It is shown that spatial relations are not always coded in the same way with the different types of Ground, as differential coding of PNs vs. CNs frequently occurs. Overall, this study combines aspects of contact linguistics, typology, the grammar of space, and the grammar of names to account for the dynamics and complexity of coding two types of Grounds in two types of spatial relations.
