Abstract

This contribution proposes to broaden the scope of contact linguistics by discussing the nexus of language and culture in World Englishes with regard to the influence of Nigerian Pidgin English proverbs on the process of acculturation/ nativisation in Nigerian English. Proverbs illustrate the linguistic impact of folk culture and traditional wisdom of the different indigenous cultures. Calquing from indigenous languages has been identified as a frequent process in West African Pidgin Englishes, especially with a view to proverbs and idioms which can thus be assumed to be a rich source of culture-specific lexis and conceptualisations in West African Englishes.
