Abstract

In editorial practice, it is understood that all surviving text carriers, whether handwritten or printed, should be consulted, but this is not the case in interpretative practice. Literary analyses or interpretations all too often rely unquestioningly on an immaterial abstraction, ›the text‹, selected primarily for its editorial reliability. The form in which it is presented and the resulting effects on the processes of understanding are given insufficient consideration. Günther Weisenborn’s narrative text »Two Men« (»Zwei Männer«)-the example with which this article seeks to promote a more material- and media-sensitive practice of analysis and interpretation- has been part of the »canon of short stories« since the 1950s and is therefore available in many different editions. It has been published in a considerable number of book and journal-like media formats in different places, with different appeal, at different times, with different titles, under different author names and aimed at different audiences in daily newspapers, in a popular calendar, in the monographic form of a story cycle, in various anthological formats. Its inclusion inWolfgangWeyrauch’s anthology of short stories,TAUSEND GRAMM, published in 1949, gained particular attention and impact, especially its labelling as a literary testimony of German- language post-war literature. This article aims to explore what effects different presentation forms have on literary comprehension processes, und thus on the interpretation history and impact of ›this one‹ text.
