Abstract
Heinrich Eisen’s second novel was to be published by Eher Verlag in 1944 to counter the dwindling support for the war. Set in the occupied Ukraine in 1941/42, the book deals with the conquest and agricultural development of the »eastern space« by the German Wehrmacht. Despite the positive opinions of the publisher’s editor and the central reviewing office, the intervention of the Wehrmacht censors ultimately led to a refusal to publish the book. The case illustrates the precarious situation in which even National Socialist literary production found itself as the war situation aggravated, and whose usage was now even more subject to political-military developments and diverging interests within the literary bureaucracy.
