Abstract

The imperial city of Nuremberg managed to keep direct combat operations away from itself in the Thirty Years’ War. This fact allowed -in view of the general crisisto maintain a relatively favourable environment for printing and illustrating books. The most important technique in book illustration was the copper engraving. As a result this led to a distinct participation of the engravers in the book production process and finally led some engravers and art dealers to become themselves as publishers. These entrepreneurs of the 17th century were able to show a considerable book production. This article publication presents these businessmen in short biographical outlines and discusses their publishing activities in detail. The officially licensed Nuremberg booksellers, that were also involved in the market as publishers, resisted the new unpleasant competitors in the field of book production and sales; however, they had no success - as far as can be determined.
