Abstract

In the years 1939-1945, Prague was one of the centers of theNazi plunder ofJewishproperty, the organized looting of books and libraries. Traces of this history can be found in two book collections preserved at the German Literature Archive Marbach (DLA). The article provides information on the theft of Jewish property in Prague and discusses trajectories of books from Jewish collections after 1945. The library of H. G. Adler and a special collection of books related to at the DLA contain books that relate to this historical context - as personalmementos to the destructionofJewish lifeontheone hand, and as documents of the less visible after life of fragments of Jewish book collections in Prague after 1945 on the other. Based on both collections, the article discusses the challenges that the acquisition of such private book collections poses for research libraries and research with these books.
