Abstract

Repoliticization of journalism as a response to the challenges of knowledgebased democracy - a pragmatist perspective. The importance of knowledge for modern societies is undisputed and, in view of the polycrises of climate development, pandemics and security policy challenges, is constantly being kept in mind (Büttner et al. 2023). According to Hornidge (2007), the knowledge society is constituted by different actors, including the state, the economy, the scientific community and the media. With regard to political science approaches that describe the conflict of legitimately competing interests and perspectives as the core of pluralistic democracies (Fraenkel 1991), e. g. agonal or pragmatist theories of democracy, the political and a politicization appear to be important for a democratic society and these authors call for a repoliticization. This also applies to journalism, whose deliberative concept of objectivity, neutrality and moderation is criticized and from which more classification and evaluation are demanded. Here, John Dewey’s pragmatist concept of democracy offers a suitable framework for political journalism (Lünenborg und Sell 2018; Banholzer 2022) in a knowledge-based democracy.
